“Without ice cream, there would be darkness and chaos.”

All that rain was worth today. It is cool and sunny and perfectly dry. Yesterday I saw my first hummingbird of the season. It was trying to drink from the tulip solar light. I quickly made sugar water and filled my feeder. I also saw an odd colored squirrel. It was tan, instead of gray. I ran in to get my camera, but the squirrel didn’t wait. I’ll keep my camera handy and an eye out for its return. Tonight is my first play of the season at the Cape Playhouse. It feels like summer.

I am spatially deprived. Pictures mean little to me when putting something together. I need words, step by step instructions. Those I understand. Yesterday a storage ottoman was delivered. It will hold CD’s, just what I need, but it came in pieces, in several pieces, and with a red bag filled with screws and small wooden dowels. The directions are in pictures. I am doomed.

My father corrected us if we wanted ice cream from the Dairy Queen. He told us it was ice milk made from a powder, no cream involved. My father worked for Hood Ice Cream and took his ice cream seriously, no pretenders allowed. He used to bring home great flavors and novelties from the Hood plant in Hyannis where he was the manager, but he never ate the fancy ice cream. His favorite was vanilla with Hershey’s syrup and whip cream from a can. He loved a bowl of ice cream at night while he was watching television, but it wasn’t just ice cream he loved. My dad was big on snacks. He’d pour a glass of milk, grab some Hydrox cookies and sit on the couch in his spot to eat and watch TV. Under the couch was where he hid his candy, nonpareils were his favorite, and at night he’d pull the box from its hiding place. I remember once my dad told someone he seldom ate snacks. I think my mother snorted when she heard him.

I can see in my mind’s eye my dad wearing his light blue shorts and no shirt sitting at the end of the couch beside the table, his spot. On the table are his glasses, generally filled with fingerprints, an ashtray, a crossword puzzled book so he could do the fills-in and a bowl of ice cream. When I visited, he always brought my dog Shauna, the first of my Boxers, her own bowl of vanilla ice cream but without the Hershey’s syrup.

    Hi,Kat
Your tan squirrel is the offspring of a black phase grey squirrel and a regular grey squirrel. When we had a lot of black squirrels around we got some very interesting colored offspring. There was one I called Two-Color because the front half was blonde and the back half was grey. There were a number of grey squirrels that had tan tails.
Unfortunately the black phase squirrels tend to get picked off by predators more frequently because their coloring stands out. There was a dearth of black squirrels around here for a while but we are on an upswing now.

      Caryn,
I have never seen a black squirrel around here, only the gray devils. Maybe this odd colored one heard how good the eatings are and moved into the neighborhood.

I like pictures better than words when putting things together, but usually I don´t look until I´ve failed a couple of times 🙂 🙂 🙂

I love ice cream, but I want it in a cone for some reason. Vanilla is always ok, but I love hazel nut 🙂

It´s cold here and the rain falls and falls. I started a couple of radiators just to keep my little cottage warm. Normally when June is like this July gets warm and sunny. But then again, some years never gets warm.
I hope the play is good!
    Christer.

      Christer,
I got the drawer together but the other pieces are too heavy and bulky for me to hold them and the screw driver at the same time. I figure I need another pair of hands.

I am partial to java chip ice cream. I too like cones.

It was chilly here all day.

      splendid,
They are just the most amazing birds. I hope more drop by and visit.

I think I read we, in this country, eat more ice cream than any other country in the world.

Life does get in the way sometimes, doesn’t it!

Are you sure it’s not that old grey squirrel that chews on your furniture who got a sun tan? Better check. He’s pretty notorious for changing costumes in summer. My Dad loved his ice cream too. I always have a scoop on apple pie mid morning. And yes, always vanilla.

      Z&Me,
Maybe all that paint bleached out the spawn of Satan’s fur. My chairs have been leaning against the table so only the ends of the arms are available for munching-and he has!

My dad was a cheese on apple pie sort of guy.

I too love ice cream. My favorite flavor is coffee. I don’t remember ever seeing any coffee ice cream when I was growing up. Usually, my parents bought that nasty rasberry ice cream with nuts in it. ICK! Or, they might buy the kind that had chocolate, vanilla and chocolate all in one. I would eat the strawberry and avoid the other two. It drove my mother crazy!

    • katry's avatar katry Says:

      Rita,
I echo that ick for raspberry and nuts. I too like coffee but java chip has become my newest favorite.

I like strawberry ice cream with real chunks of the berry in it.

      Minicapt,
I do have an electric ice cream maker, but I haven’t used it in forever-this summer I’ll have to pull it out and use it-the ice cream was delicious.
