“Nothing is more highly to be prized than the value of each day”

It rained all night. I could hear it from the open window in my bedroom, and I fell asleep lulled by the rhythm of the drops. Though the rain has stopped, the sky is gray and the day is getting darker. My outside lights, timed for dusk, have been on all morning. The return of the rain is close.

I have a poor sense of time now, and I suspect I might be bragging. The days all run together. I go to bed when I’m tired and get up when I am so inclined. My clock radio broke a long time ago, and I didn’t replace it. I saw no need. On my little calendar I write notes to remind me of appointments or obligations. Most days the calendar is blank. Today is one of those days.

I have a list of favorite sorts of things. I’m not talking the big favorites like Christmas or my birthday but rather the simple ordinary day favorites. Lying on the couch on a snowy winter’s day with an afghan keeping me warm is one. Napping in the lull of an late afternoon is another. A book I can’t put down until it’s finished is high on the list as is a night sky bright with stars. I love the smell of burning wood. Chocolate, I can’t forget chocolate. It’s long been a favorite, black jelly beans and really hard Peeps too. I love cheeseburgers from the grill and watching baseball games. I wear my slippers all winter, and I love the way they keep my feet warm. Sweatshirts with pouches are my favorites. I don’t care so much about the hoods. B movies and black and white science fiction while away a rainy afternoon. Add popcorn to make it near perfect.

I’m living a rich life.

And tomorrow the World Cup begins in South Africa – 64 games over the next month. My (to be) newly installed DVR will be going, I will be in blackout mode everyday until I have watched enough football for the night or have reached exhaustion. Our doors open on Saturday for our friends young and old to watch the USA play England and then barbeque.
Come one come all and enjoy the greatest show in sports
    Life is awfully good.

      My Dear Hedley,
My sister and her family are the soccer fans and are primed to watch all day and night. Because they’ll be in New Hampshire for vacation in July, they’re already scouting sports bars where they can watch.

The weather is much the same over here, but it is too cold to have the window open at night.

I see we share much of the same favourite things! But I don´t really like hamburgers that much, but I love chinese food (or anything my friend Camilla does 🙂 ) I do like the hood though, but it was long ago I owned one.

Sitting by the ocean in a storm is another thing I love. Baseball is hardly ever shown here, but that would most certanly be a favourite!
    Have a great day now!
    Christer.

      Christer,
I also love Chinese food. Last night I really wanted some for dinner but just didn’t want to get dressed again to go back out. I’m still craving a bit of Chinese food.

The ocean in a storm is magnificent and fierce. I love the waves crashing sending water high into the air. Amazing sights.

    Hi, Kat
Good to find another fan of really hard Peeps.
I have clocks in the various appliances around the house but I seldom look at them. The only clock I look at is the Whatever, I’m Retired one that I stuck on the window sill in the bathroom so I’d know how late I was running for the odd times I have to be somewhere. It isn’t very accurate but then again, it does say “Whatever” right on it.

      Caryn,
My mother sent me Peeps in Africa and they were rock hard when I got them. Since then, I’m a fan.

I try to schedule everything for one day so I can have all the rest for me.

Those of us still in the work force envy you all. I don’t think I’d enjoy sitting at home reading all day; eating hard peeps which I also like; and looking forward to a grilled cheeseburger. That sounds dull to me. I want to travel, see what I always said I’d do, if I had money, but never really had the time. In retirement I suppose with nothing to do but sleep late in the mornings, I might as well be doing that in Singapore or some place I’ve never seen but want to.

      Z&Me,
For too many years to count, I was up by 5:15 at the latest, in work by 6:30, home the earliest at 4 and back in bed by no later than 10. The weekends were for chores, all the things I couldn’t get to all week. My life had no down time, okay maybe a Sunday afternoon periodically but that’s it.

Being retired means I can choose. I love my idle days. They are filled with everything I didn’t have time to do. I also travel. I have to Colorado more times in the last four years than I had for the last 15. I’m going again a couple of weeks just to see the Sox play. For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been planning trips. I have no idea where for the first but the second will be back to Ghana in 2011.

      I think I have a perfect life.

Curling up with an Afghan to keep you warm Kat????

Did you get him from “Rent A Refugee”???

    Pete,
I am going through the last few days of mail and coincidentally just opened one from you but the mail call got me before I read it though I did see a song attached, always a wonderful thing!

I have been horribly lazy-didn’t even answer yesterday’s comments until this morning. The mail will be coming!

Winter favorites – Watching cardinals, chickadees and other beautiful birds as they dine at our feeders. The smell of freshly brewed coffee to warm the morning. A fire in the fireplace and a new novel to enjoy. Veggie soup and homemade bread. A white landscape with the sun making everything shine. Worship service on Christmas.

Spring favorites – Lilacs, lily of-the-valley, tulips and other spring beauties. Fields with the first slips of corn and soybeans. The smell of spring rain. Rhubarb pie.

Summer favorites – Watching lightening bugs glisten in the night. Baseball games. Band concerts in the park. Hot dogs burned to a crisp on the grill. Butterflies first visit. 4th of July fireworks.

Fall favorites – The orange and red foliage. Pumpkin pie. Indian corn and bittersweet on the mantle. Cool nights. Thanksgiving and Halloween. Camp fires.

I could go on and on! I will spare you. Every season affords us so much pleasure, and the simply things are the ones that bring such joy. I have learned that lesson with age!

      Rita,
I love all your favorites and count many of my own among them.

I love traveling and seeing the world but all in all I have found that life’s simple pleasures do for me just fine.
