“But if we continue conducting nuclear tests… it’s possible that another Godzilla might appear somewhere in the world again.”

The day is dark and the weather threatening. Rain, predicted for today and tonight, is already palpable in the dampness of the air. Earlier I heard the first rumblings of thunder way off in the distance. The latest rumblings are much closer, nearer to the house. The storm is not so far away.

A rainstorm on a Saturday was never welcome when I was a kid. It meant staying home on the best day of the week. It meant whining about fate and my lot in life. Why me? Why Saturday? The house was small, and on a rainy weekend day we, the six of us, were crammed together. TV was the best diversion when we could agree on a program. Most times it was the morning cartoons and serials then movies in the afternoon. If we were lucky, it was an old horror film from the 30’s, a 50’s black and white B movie or a Japanese creature movie, where none of the characters’ mouths matched their dialogue. The atomic bomb was prominent and gave birth to some of my favorite B movie creatures. (Side note: the rain has started, and it’s tremendous. Thunder is overheard and rumbling constantly. I saw lightning in the front yard. All of the outside lights on timers are lit from the darkness brought by the rain. The windows in this room are open so I can hear the storm.) Now, back to the main feature. One of my favorite creatures created by a bomb blast is The Amazing Colossal Man, who became a nasty sort after the plutonium got him and the cure didn’t work. I totally understand his madness. Wearing a giant diaper is cause enough. I have often mentioned Them, the giant ants, as being my favorite of all, but Godzilla, with Raymond Burr added, is also a huge favorite though it does make me laugh now. I still have a special fondness for several of the creatures who came from beneath the sea.

It seems I have planned my rainy day. I’ll pull out my SciFi Classic 50 Movie Collection, pop some corn and get cozy. I think I’ll start with The Atomic Brain.

I love and has always loved those Japanese horror movies 🙂 Godzilla and Mothra were shown in swedish television during summers. We saw the ones where the caracters talked english, but the mouth kept on going for a long time or stopped very early. Japanese doesn´t fit any other languages 🙂 🙂 🙂

Later on they stated to show all the american hotrror movies too. The ants is a hughe favourite too. But what I loved the most was all the sci fi movies from the fifties we also got the chance to see. Unfortunally I only knows the names they got in swedish (and they seldom had anything to do with the american original title).

They almost never show those films any more, not even our channel that always shows B-movies. I miss them a lot.

Sunny and warm over here today. But we had a couple of hours when the sun was blocked by soe clouds in the early afternoon. Later today I´ll have corn on the cobs 🙂
    Have a great day now!
    Christer.

      Christer,
We don’t get to see as much as I’d like, but we do have a great movie channel which will play them periodically, even the old black and white ones. Them, the ants, is my all time favorite.

We had sun for all of ten minutes today. It was humid and cloudy all day. Another one like today is expected tomorrow.

We loved Creature Feature with Feep (who later went on to become Major Mudd). Creature Feature was on late night so we didn’t always get to see it. It ran all the old monster flicks and bad sci-fi movies.
My dog occasionally reminds me of one of the charachters on Mystery Science Theater 3000. He has a similar silhouette to one of the robots.

We had an early storm here but now its partly sunny and humid. Hope it cools down this evening.

      Caryn,
I watch Creature Feature when it started on Saturday afternoons then stayed up late to watch Creature Double Feature. I don’t remember Feep. All I remember is a voice announcing the show. I don’t remember a host.

I watched an old sci fi movie a while back that I remember loving as a child and low and behold it was the dumbest movie I ever watched. Couldn’t get through it. But back then it must have held my attention because I remember watching it several times. I liked Superman and Roy Rodgers on Saturday mornings where we lived. The Thin Man was hot too and I think Boston Blackie, not sure if that was the title. Rain here too Kat.

      Z&Me,
My sister was highly offended when she had her kids watch some of her favorite B&W scifi movies, and they laughed.

Suspending disbelief is what I espouse.

One of the first ones that I saw was the 1954, I think I have the correct year, version of ‘War of the Worlds’. I had lot’s of nightmares of Martian flying death ray machines for months after seeing the film. I couldn’t see any of the later remakes because the memories of the of those nightmares. Of the Japanese ones I remember ‘Mothra’. I don’t know why it sticks in my memory but it had to do with singing tiny woman in a box. All of those B movies were Saturday morning kid shows at the neighborhood theater. The worst B movie ever made was ‘Plan 9 from Outer Space.’ It’s so bad it has become a cult film.

      Bob,
That film was a favorite of mine when I was younger. I loved the sound of their ray and the great colors of their ship. The scary part was when the minister was burned to dust. I have that film in my small collection.

I’m laughing at your memory of Mothra. I hated the sound of the singing. It was almost eerie.

I also have Plan 9 from Outer Space, and it is just awful-cheesy effects and bad acting.
