“How it pours, pours, pours, In a never-ending sheet! How it drives beneath the doors! How it soaks the passer’s feet!”

It was a mighty rain storm which started in the afternoon and continued all night into the morning. The oak tree branches swayed left and right blown by the wind. The candles and bird feeders on the lower branches bounced back and forth but none fell. I’ll go out later and empty all the candle holders brimming with rain water, add jelly to the orioles’ feeders and sunflower seeds to the other birds’ feeders. My kitchen floor is dog paw printed, and I have to overcome the urge to clean it as it will just get wet and muddy every time Gracie goes in and out.

I don’t ever see slip on shoe rubbers any more. My father had some. His were black just like everybody else’s were back then. I remember he’d use his thumb like a shoe horn to stretch the rubber to fit around the backs of his shoes. My father also had black galoshes for those days when rubbers weren’t protection enough from the snow. His galoshes went over his shoes and had metal clasps in the front. They were clunky looking and just didn’t fit in with his suit, top coat and fedora.

I remember see-through plastic raincoats. Women wore them, and they were once quite stylish and could be accessorized with see-through boots which fit over heels and see-through rain scarves to match. I used to have one of those rain scarves in a plastic case which was closed with a snap and was small enough to be kept in my bag for rain emergencies. The scarf was folded to a tiny size but, when unfolded, expanded to fit over my head. When I wore my scarf, it always had accordion creases from being folded. It was pretty darn ugly.

The only rain gear I have now are a couple of nylon jackets, but I don’t ever wear them. Most times I run from the house to the car to the store to the car to the house.  The  faster I run, the dryer I stay.

Kat, I bid a fond fairwell to you and members of the Kat Klub as I get ready to fly East and keep going that way until I return to Detroit. First stop Madrid for the UEFA Champions League Final on Saturday and then on to Tibet.

The trusty D90 is at the ready, and I will “see” you in a few weeks

Christer – Thank you. After I leave Madrid, I head on to Helsinki which is almost your part of the world and then on to Beijing.
The Ash issue has been a major focus for the last 2 weeks and I hope that current conditions continue to prevail.

73F hare today but I missed the most of the fine weather since I hade to work overtime today. By the time I got home the rain had started, but it was really nice taking the walk in it. Both my dogs and I enjoyed every second of it.

I don´t think I´ve seen galoshes for sale in years here. But they were still quite common when I grew up in the early seventies. I dont think I´ve ever seen rubber boots where one could have the normal shoes inside of them. All rubber boots were green when I grew up, never any other color 🙂

I think those see through rain coats are getting popular again. I´ve seen rather many last year and this spring. I don´t have any rain coat at all any longer. My last one I had in my car and every time I had the car in the garage mice went in to it and ate my raicoat 🙂 🙂
    Have a great day now!
    Christer.

      Christer,
Gracie hates the rain. Last night I opened the door for her to go out, she took three steps and turned around and came back inside.

That’s funny about the green rubbers. I haven’t seen galoshes for sale either. I do have one friend who uses them.

      Mice will eat anything!

    Hi Kat
I don’t use overshoes or raincoats as a general rule but I love umbrellas. It’s the sound of the rain that makes me like them. My favorite umbrella is hand painted with cartoons of Jack Russell Terriers. I’ve had it for 20+ years and its kind of beaten up with some broken ribs. I would love to find some one who could fix it.

When I was 5 years old I had a bright pink raincoat with fold over buckles (like the ones on galoshes) and a matching pink sou’wester rain hat. I was styling.

      Hi Caryn,
You are so right about umbrellas. Last summer I sat outside under the table umbrella, and I loved the sound.

I haven’t used a carry it over your head umbrella for a long while. Next storm I’ll have to use mine and go for a walk.

What pray tell does Hedley do for a living. Hey buddy, can I carry your baggage for you??? This was a rain, rain, go away post today Kat. I always thought those shoe covers looked rather stupid. . . on anyone including my Dad. And the see through raincoats were LOL . . . and we did. I don’t remember the scarfs but from what I read here . . .LOL. !! They probably looked stupid on women too.

      Z&Me,
I’d fight you for the job.

The scarves did look darn silly, especially the folded ones. Women thought that rain ensemble was so chic.
