I love this song, this version, and John Prine’s own. Although it seems more appropriate to be sung by a woman. I have sung it twice in pubs, once accompanied by my wife on uke, and once solo with just me and my guitar.
Peter,
I didn’t find Nancy Griffith until her album Other Voices, Other Rooms, her tenth album. John Prine sings harmony with Nanci on this song. After that I was hooked. I bought several of her albums and saw her in concert three times. She died too young.
Yes, it is a wonderful album. Two friends went with us to see her in Edinburgh many years ago. I had found her through the track “Lonestar State Of Mind”. I have a copy of Other Voices too.
I also have Other Voices Too. I liked it but not as much as I liked the first Other Voices, Other Rooms. I remember seeing Nanci around her 40th birthday. She had bought herself a pair of red cowboy boots. She said every woman of 40 should have a pair.
