This is a Lockheed Vega. This was the kind of airplane that aviation pioneer Wily Post lost his life along with humorist Will Rogers in 1935. The pair were killed in Alaska while trying to set an around the world speed record.

I thought of you when I found this photo. I had no doubt you’d know this plane. I remember reading about their deaths, but I didn’t know it was in Alaska.
