“How dear to this heart are the scenes of my childhood when I found recollection presents them to view!”

Yesterday was downright cold, and when the wind whipped through, it made the day feel even colder. It was a fleece day, an acknowledgement to the coming winter. Today is a pretty day. It is in the mid-40’s with a bright, bright sun. The few red leaves and the pervasive brown leaves on the oak trees shine in the light. We still have a wind.

When I was a kid, I loved walking to school in the mornings. We lived on a hill. Across the street from the bottom of the hill was a huge field, a tended field with baseball diamonds. I always thought of the field as a shortcut so I’d cross it to get to the sidewalk on the street which led to school. The sidewalk was long, the whole length of the street, and was interrupted only by the railroad tracks.

When I was growing up, the living room was where we spent the most time. The TV was there in a corner. We’d sit on the rug close to the set and watch it. We never went blind. In the late afternoons, my mother would be in the kitchen making dinner. In my mind’s eye I can see her standing by the sink peeling potatoes. The stove was behind her. The fridge beside her. The kitchen was small. We always had potatoes. My father never had supper with us. He’d get home late from work. He was a salesman. I remember a photo of him coming in the front door. He is wearing a fedora and a top coat, the unofficial men’s winter wardrobe back then. Both were black.

I didn’t question much when I was a kid. I went to school every weekday, played outside if I could in the afternoons, watched TV, did my homework, ate dinner, watched more TV then went to bed. I was never bored. Kids seldom were.

    Hi Kat,

Today the sky was mostly clear and the high temperature a nice 72°. This is the nicest time of the year. We usually get our first freeze about November 22nd.

I took my daughter to lunch today and we drove through downtown Grapevine. They are already decorating for Christmas. After all, Grapevine is, “The Christmas Capital of Texas”. But why so early. Last month my better half was shopping in Costco and they already had Christmas trees up! Why not Christmas in July? During the pandemic, one my wife’s friends had a houseful of bored kids, so they got out the tree, the decorations, and did, Christmas in July. 🙂

I just wonder if this will be the last inexpensive holiday season. If Trump raises tariffs on imported goods, all the stuff we buy from China will go up in price. No company in the U.S. has the equipment nor the workers who wan to assemble iPhones in this country. Speaking of the Orange pumpkin, he just nominated Robert Kennedy Jr. to be the head of HHS. Or, Matt Gatz as Attorney General. Not one of them should be confirmed. There only has to be 4 Republican senators to keep these loony tunes out of the cabinet. Kennedy is an anti-vaccine proponent who claims to have had a worm in his brain. And, Matt Gatz was being investigated in the House of Representatives for ethics violations. I assume having sex with a seventeen year young girl is not ethical, even for Republicans. The world will be much different than anything we have ever seen before. Hang on it’s going to be a crazy ride.

      Hi Bob,
It stayed in the 40’s today. I stayed around the house cozy and warm. The weather will be the same through the weekend.

I have seen a few houses already decorated with lights. I think people, knowing what is coming in January, are trying to squeeze out the last joyful holiday. Lights brighten the night and maybe even brighten a few of us.

I thought the lady was smart entertaining her kids with Christmas. I can’t imagine being locked in with kids for that long a time.

I have heard Trump’s cabinet choices as being a clown car. Tons of clown memes are all over. Some trumpers are already finding out he lied to get elected. I laughed at the top search after the election which was how do I change my vote.

Unfortunately, we don’t know what damage the clown car led by the orange pumpkin will do to our democracy in four years. That’s assuming that we still have a democracy.

We will know some things quickly. Prices will go up, inflation will run rampant and immunizations will die away. All that is just a start.
