Kat, its that special day on KTCC where we celebrate the birthday of Joni Mitchell and remember the passing of KTCC favorite Lenny Cohen.
The Joni Archive series has now reached the 4th volume which covers Hejira, Don Juan, Mingus and the love Shadows and Light. I did see that tour at Pine Knob which was deeply in to Mingus. It was the end of the road for me. Only a couple of albums released in the 80s both mediocre. I have tried numerous times to come to grips with Mingus but never have. I want to but it just doesnt happen. But what a run pick any album through that release and you can argue it was her best or a masterpiece of some variation thereof . Me – I will argue Court and Spark all day long and so rate Hissing
Over the years how many times did Leonard Cohen feature on KTCC and always produce a stream of conversation ? His known love affair with Joni does add to the drama of the calendar alignment. Songs of was one of the very first albums I owned. I thought it would suggest that I was sensitive and stuff but in reality I could barely play it and freely admit I was much more comfortable with The Faces “A Nods as good as a wink”
Both artists have brought us so much pleasure. Great post today Kat

My Dear Hedley,
I wore down the groves on the first Leonard Cohen album, The Songs of Leonard Cohen. I didn’t know him, but I knew his songs covered by other singers. I still have that record though the worst for wear. I admit I was less enamored by his much later albums.
I was a Joni lover from the first time I heard her. I bought her first album and then her second album which I brought with me to Ghana. In the humidity, I often had to rewind it with first a whack on the table and then a hand rewind using a Bic pen. I have never tired of listening to it.
Lenny on Coffee has, as you’ve written, courted controversies. He is an either an I like him or I hate him. There is no in between. You know on which side I stand!!!
