The hawks have moved to another part of the woods so the songbirds have returned to our feeders. Most especially a Cardinal that showed up two year ago, alone, after a brush fire some six miles away. He has an unusual coloring. He’s Coral Pink. He had been badly singed. He would come alone at dusk to feed and get water. And he’d call for his mate. I suspect he lost his original mate in the fire. After a couple of months he had produced new feathers and shortly there after found a mate. That’s highly unusual since they mate for life. When one of my neighbor’s boys were young I cautioned them about shooting at songbirds with their BB Guns so I wrote this poem and gave it to them to let them know how special the little bird are to us.

The Little House That Sways In The Wind

I know you don’t know me but I am your friend
    I live behind your house,
In the little house that sways in the wind.

I remember the day when you first came to stay
At the house on the corner of fifteenth and main.
I sang you my song and fluffed up my fluff
To show you I’m little but I’m very tough.
I know you don’t know me but I am your friend
I live in the little house that sways in the wind.

I watched as you played when the weather was nice
And as the snow covered the ground once or twice.
I laughed as you ran like a cat from the rain
And was sad when you fell, crying in pain.
I know you don’t know me but I am your friend
I live in the little house that sways in the wind.

I see you each day when you set off to school
And welcome you back in the mid-afternoon.
I look for you putting the seed out to share
And sing my song clearly so you’ll know I’m there.
I know you don’t know me but I am your friend
    I live behind your house,
In the little house that sways in the wind.

      Beto,
I have a cardinal couple affectionally known as Mr. And Mrs. Cardinal. They started coming last summer. I didn’t realize they mate for life. I’m glad your cardinal has regrown his magnificent red feathers and found a mate.

This poem brought tears. It is so heartfelt. Thank you!!!
