My favorite version is the Count Basi version used in the movie, “Blazing Saddles”. But this version is also great. Thanks.

I have been a long time Billie Holiday fan. I didn’t even think of any other version of the song. I forgot all about it in Blazing Saddles.

When I first saw Blazing Saddles in the movie theater, there were two woman sitting behind me. When Mel Brooks appears on screen as a Native American speaking Yiddish, one woman said to the other, “I wonder why he’s speaking German?” What he says is something like, “Oh my, he’s darker than we are.” A Mel Brooks inside joke.

I saw it at a movie theater in Hyannis which is only open summers. It was fall. The ticket collector said the theater was cold as it didn’t have heat. We said that can’t be true. The movie is Blazing Saddles. She didn’t see the humor.
