Hi Kat,
As you know, this song has so many meanings, and I think an ending. It has to, as I remarked, on another post they just wouldn’t just leave him alone. Remember, I still believe in fairies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puff,_the_Magic_Dragon
Lori,
I had heard of the drug interpretation, but I rejected it. I considered the originator was just part of the drug culture so he saw drugs everywhere. I always just thought of this as about a boy leaving his childhood and his dragon behind. I always think is is such a sad song.
Many years ago my wife and I attended a Peter, Paul, and Mary concert at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Downtown Dallas. After the concert, in the Green Room, Peter Yarrow signed my program to give to my then young daughter. He wrote, “Puff Lives” and signed it. Paul also signed it but Mary wasn’t in the room after the show. Peter told me she wasn’t feeling well. Unfortunately, for everyone she passed away from cancer a few months later.
I used to have most of their albums and have been to three PP&M concerts, more than any other singers’ concerts. I saw them in their heyday, after they reunited and then a few years later. I was so sorry when Mary passed.

So I believe the story in Wiki.
I’m off to visit Puff.
Cheers,
