When I was little kid in Brooklyn N.Y., I watched the bigger kids playing stickball as you described except they used a pink, soft, rubber ball that was available in local candy stores. They used parked car’s tires for first and third bases along with the man hole covers as home, second base, and the mound. Hitting a well thrown pitch with a broomstick took a lot of practice.

      Bob,
I know exactly what ball you are talking about as the half ball was exactly that. They put stuff on the street to act as home and the bases.

Where I grew up in a suburb of Chicago, there were alleys that kids played in. Ball games were usually just ‘catch’ or ‘keep-a-way’, because the actual ball games were played in bigger spaces like a park or the grade school playground. In the alleys we rode our bikes or the scooters my brother and I made from old wooden crates. Our skates were attached for the wheels. Those were great fun.

      Tina,
I remember those scooters made from wooden crates. A few boys from my neighborhood built one. I always liked the sound of the skates rolling on the pavement.

I grew up in a town. We played ball on the street in front of our house. The more organized ball games were in the field below my house, mostly the little league,no girls allowed!!.
