“Comfort food is the food that makes us feel good – satisfied, calm, cared for, and carefree.”
Some winter days are so pretty. Today is one of them. The bright sun glints through the trees and the blue sky is cloudless. The air is so clear that the pine branches seem to pop like in a 3d movie. It is cold, but with no wind it feels warmer. Days like today make winter bearable.
My dance card for the week is uke filled. Besides practice and my lesson, I have two concerts, tomorrow and Friday. We are starting to practice our Irish music.
When I was a kid, cold didn’t matter. I still had to walk to school even during a deep freeze. I just bundled more. Mittens kept my hands warm so I could carry my lunch box. My school bag had a long strap so I put it over my shoulder. I wore my school shoes though sometimes I had to wear boots. I never liked wearing boots. I had to pull them on over my shoes. It was always a bit of a struggle but taking them off was even worse. Later, I discovered if I took off my shoes I could easily put them in and out of my boots then slide my foot into the shoes.
My house had radiators. One was against the wall at the foot of my bed. I could hear the water running through the radiator pipes. I could hear the steam hissing. Sometimes, if I were cold, I’d sit with my back against the radiator. I’d put my shoes underneath it until they were dry. I always loved the hissing sound.
Tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches are high on my comfort food list. They were the perfect winter lunch. I think every mother bought Campbell’s tomato soup. The can was the measure. My mother would add half can of water and half a can of milk though sometimes it was just milk which made the soup thick and tasty. The sandwich was always white bread and Velveeta cheese which melted perfectly. I loved dunking the sandwich into the soup. My mother made the best winter lunches, the best grilled cheese sandwiches.

Hi Kat,
Today the sky is partly covered with high, thin, clouds. The predicted high temperature today is 79°. Our latest freeze date is April 11th. this year it might be last Sunday when the low hit 31°. 🙂
I love grilled cheese sandwiches. They’re especially good with tomato soup. I like them made with buttered white bread and slices of American cheese. I have them made by with other cheeses and breads. In France they are called a, “Croque Madam”, and with a slice of ham they become a, Croque Monsieur“.
I once read a recipe that replaced the butter on the bread with mayonnaise. I never tried it that way, but how bad could it be?

Hi Bob,
On my way home from uke practice, just about a half hour ago, it was 23°. Our latest freeze date is May 30th. I do plant my flowers earlier than that and have never had a problem.
When I as a kid, a plain grilled cheese sandwich with my soup was enough. As I got older, I added stuff like tomatoes. Sometimes I’d make grilled cheese croutons for my soup. Even on American menus the sandwiches are written as Croque Madam and Croque Monsieur. There is usually an explanation.
I have read the same thing and have been tempted to try the mayonnaise.

I dunno Kat, the sun is pouring in through my window and its 50. Here we are about to exit February and we have had maybe a week of snow events that required some snow blower effort. But do I care, no its fab and allows me to start walking again outside.
This week saw one of my granddaughters hit the big 1 and achieve toddler status. The training wheels are off and she is taking a good number of steps before going bottom down.
We have a short break until the beginning of April when the next one hits the magical one. Of course the seem so long ago when The Prince was wearing a crown and destroying a birthday cake. Now he is about to hit 18 (I know) and is still considering an offer to play football at a division 3 school of very high academic standards

My Dear Hedley,
I got home nearly an hour ago. It was 23°. The long range weather says 50° here on Friday. I’m hoping all the snow and ice will melt.
I loved the picture of her eating, smashing, her cake. The tiara was a great touch for a princess.
It is so difficult to believe the prince will be 18. Ryder’s 18th is in July. Ryder turned down the higher division school for Bates division 3,. He knows there he will play most games. He has to report early as he is going to be trained as center.
I find Ryder an amazing kid. Despite the stroke and heart attack his mother had last year and all the rehabs and the health issues which remain, Ryder was able to concentrate and maintain his National Honor Society status and his football status. They will miss each other so much.
