“Good manners: The noise you don’t make when you’re eating soup.”
Today is one of those fall days which can’t seem to make up its mind. It rained, the rain stopped, the sun came out but now the sun is gone. The house was chilly when I woke up. I wanted to stay in bed, but both dogs were insistent that I get up to let them out so I did. I am a mere peasant in my own home.
My dance card is filled this week. Besides household chores, I have a uke event every day from Tuesday through Friday with two, a lesson and a concert, on Wednesday. I’d stay home those days if I didn’t have my uke. I’d be the queen sloth.
When I was a kid, I didn’t know anybody who played a musical instrument except when I was in the first grade, and we were all in the rhythm band where I mastered the triangle. I remember being in the second row. The sticks were in the first row so they could rhythmically tap the floor with their sticks. Practice was in the big room in the cellar of the school. We had a concert. Parents came. I was so very proud of my performance. I played a mean triangle.
When I was growing up, I loved soup. My favorite was the universal favorite, Campbell’s chicken noodle soup with Saltines on the side. I used to break the crackers in half and put them in the bowl. They’d float on the top of the soup until they got soggy. That was when I liked them best. Sometimes, on the very coldest winter days, my mother would fill my lunch box thermos with soup, chicken noodle of course. She’d always add the Saltines. My second favorite soup was tomato. It was always served with a grilled cheese sandwich which was dunked into the soup. My mother made the best grilled cheese sandwiches with the bread perfectly browned and the cheese, always Velveeta, gooey.
I am a fan of sandwiches. I use my panini press. I fill the bread with anything left in my fridge. My favorite has cheese, avocados and a meat of some sorts, all topped with horseradish sauce. Even thinking about it makes my mouth water.

Hi Kat,
Well autumn finally arrived this morning. The low temperature was 48° and the high will be a chilly 66°.
My Texas Rangers won the first game of the American League Championship Playoff games against our state rivals, Houston Astros. The second game starts this afternoon. Go Rangers. Two years ago they lost over 100 games.
My uncle Sam, with whom I lived with in New York, always had to have homemade soups with his dinner. My aunt Lilian would start the soups by mid morning. She would start with soup greens and then boil a whole chicken. She would serve it one day with noodles and the following day with something else such as Matzo balls. On the other days she prepared a variety of different soups which she also served during the week. Regardless, I liked Campbell’s chicken noodle better. 🙂 My aunt never made nor served my uncle tomato soup, but she would serve the Campbell’s tomato’s variety to us kids along with the required grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch when we weren’t in school.

Hi Bob,
I think your low was cooler than mine which is now and is in the low 50’s. I went nowhere all day, but I did do a long avoided chore, cleaning my biggest cabinet. I had to wash bowls and dishes, organize the Tupperware and toss a few rusty pans away. It took a while as I wrapped the clean dishes in plastic.
I have no horse in the race, but I’ll be glad to root for the Rangers.
My mother always made pea soup if she had a ham dinner. When I lived on the cape but would visit, she’d always have saved me some she’d frozen. I still had some after she’d died. I invited my friends to enjoy it with me in honor of my mom.
I’d always make turkey soup after Thanksgiving. I’d freeze some for my dad who loved it. I guess that was pro quid pro!

Horse in the race, is similar to dog in the fight. 🙂 I like your version better. The Rangers may be the only Major League team to have never won a World Series. Two years ago they lost over 100 games. They were last in the World Series in 2010 and 2011, losing to the Giants and the Cardinals. So far they swept the Tampa Bay Rays and the Orioles who had the most wins in the American League. Last night and today they beat the current World Champion Houston Astros. It’s an Interstate 45 ALCS series. Wednesday night they will be playing at home in Arlington.
Our restaurant had split pea soup today for lunch. I’m not a fan even if it’s prepared from a ham bone.

I’ve always said the horse in the race, never the dog in the fight. I have talked about the fight in the dog. I know the pain of never winning a World Series. We suffered for years. I hope you get to taste the victory of winning one. It is sweet.
