“Millions long for immortality who don’t know what to do with themselves on a rainy Sunday afternoon.”
The rain hasn’t stopped, and now there is also a wind. I’m wearing my sweatshirt in the chilly house. I have an empty dance card so I’m going nowhere, not for groceries and not to the dump. The dogs are quickly out and back. I’m watching Godzilla attack Tokyo.
When I was a kid, on Sunday rainy days, we were inside the house. We were many and the house was small. It always felt crowded when we were all there. I’d hang out for a while in the living room reading the Sunday comics and watching the Sunday movies. For some reason I remember Lassie, Come Home. Dinner was usually around two. I think the whole neighborhood had dinner around two. The backyards were empty and no cars drove up the street. After dinner we usually just lazed around. I’d sequester myself in my room with my latest book in hand.
Sometimes we’d go to East Boston in the afternoon to visit my grandparents. Sunday was the traditional day for the whole family to visit. My mother was the third of eight. We had a million cousins. They were all there some Sundays. I remember the younger cousins running up and down the stairs from the first floor to the kitchen below where my mother, my grandmother and the aunts hung out. I remember smoke in the air and spaghetti on the stove. My grandmother always had a hunk of parmesan cheese and a grater on the table. That was when I found out that not all cheese comes sliced in a package. I loved using the grater so much my spaghetti was hidden. The cheese looked like snow on a mountain top.
We’d go home in the early evening just as it was getting dark. My sisters would sometimes fall asleep. I’d look out the window. I remember a ranch house with a huge oxen yoke on the garage. That was the sign we were almost home. The yoke didn’t seem strange back then, but now I wonder. Why in the heck did they have an oxen yoke?

Hi Kat,
Today is again sunny with a predicted high temperature of 101° again. There’s a cold front moving in tonight from Oklahoma, but our rain chances have been lowered from 50% to only 20%. 🙂 I’m not sure if my daughter and my spouse will get into the pool this afternoon. They are going to watch some sappy movie in our home theater room upstairs.
I plan on watching the Rangers play their last home game against Seattle today. The Rangers beat them both Friday and last night regaining first place in the American League west division. Seattle, Houston, and the Rangers were in a three way tie last week. After the Ranger game I will watch the Cowboys play Arizona. This Sunday is a full day of sports on TV.
Tomorrow, is the holiest day of the Jewish year, Yom Kippur. It’s the day of atonement. Jews are supposed to fast and pray for forgiveness for the sins they committed against God. Sins against others require personal forgiveness. We will watch the morning service on TV streaming from the Central Synagogue in Manhattan. Then, we will go to lunch. 🙂

Hi Bob,
We have left summer behind. The day stayed damp and cold. It is time for the back door screen to be put away and to be replaced by the storm door. I have to leave the back door open as the dog door is part of the outside door. We will be getting rain again tomorrow. Tuesday, though, should be a nice day. No pool time left around here.
The Sox were such a disappointment this year. They have already fired the general manager. He did well with bulking the farm system but not the Sox themselves. It was a wait for next year sort of season. At least the Patriots finally won a game.
Have a blessed Yom Kippur tomorrow! May your atonement be meaningful.

Thanks Kat,
The Rangers beat Seattle today while the Royals swept Houston. The Rangers are in sole possession of first place in the AL West. The next opponent on the road is the Angels and the Mariners. The Cowboys lost to the Arizona Cardinals. Their first loss this season.

We are at the opposite end. The Patriots won their first game. The Sox are at the bottom of the AL East. Yikes!!
