“You can spread jelly on the peanut butter but you can’t spread peanut butter on the jelly.”

Hurricane Lee came and went. We had heavy winds and rain. My electricity flickered then went out, but before I could curse my fate, it came back on, all except the cable. That happened again when I was upstairs ready for bed. Alexa was quiet, no internet. I turned off the light and went to sleep. This morning Alexa was her cheerful self. The weather is damp and cold. The temperature will get down to the high 50’s, but tomorrow summer will reappear. The predicted high is 77°.

Today will be a cozy day. I won’t get dressed. I’ll loll and watch bad science fiction movies. I’ll also read a bit and snack a little.

When I was a kid, getting cozy meant lying in my bed with a good book. I had a light which hung over the bed board. It was pink plastic. When I used to sneak and read at night, I’d be under the covers with my light, but I had to keep surfacing because it got so hot under the blankets. A few times the plastic melted. My mother could never understand why, and I never explained. That bed lamp was such a good thing even now I have one hanging from the bed board, but I don’t have to sneak under the covers.

One of my favorite snacks was peanut butter on Saltines. Sometimes I made a Saltine sandwich with peanut butter and marshmallow. Other times it was peanut butter and jam or jelly. My mother used to buy Welch’s grape jelly in the glasses. I remember my Howdy Doody glass. I was heart-struck when it fell and broke. Still now I always have the makings of a peanut butter and jelly cracker sandwich though I sometimes branch out to Ritz.

It is time for another cup of coffee, maybe even some toast. I’ll slathered it with fig jam. I don’t have any Welch’s.

    Hi Kat,

Today is cloudy with a high temperature of only 85°. The rain showers have sadly missed my house all week long.

Today is the Jewish New Year, 5784. Some people believe that the holiday is the birthday of the world. Since my kids were little we always buy a birthday cake for the holiday with the words, “Happy Birthday World”, written in icing. We also eat the traditional apples dipped in honey to remind us to have a sweet year. Since the pandemic we haven’t attended services in person. But instead we have watched services on TV streaming from the Central Synagogue in Manhattan.

I’m not a fan of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I don’t like the mixture of peanut butter and the jelly together. I do like peanut butter sandwiches and jelly sandwiches separately. 🙂

Every morning I eat a package of six peanut butter on Ritz crackers. On Friday mornings the managers bring in boxes of donuts and I substitute the package of crackers for three donuts along with my coffee. Usually I eat two glazed and one chocolate donut. Occasionally, I eat a couple of more donuts for desert. 🙂

      Hi Bob,
We stayed damp and chilly the whole day. I even put on socks. It rained some but only in the morning. I have all the doors and windows shut.

I think it is a neat tradition to celebrate with a birthday cake. I haven’t ever had apples in honey but that sounds tasty. How did the New Year get to be year 5784? I did find that months are based around the phases of the moon, and an extra month is added every two or three years to keep the calendar in line with the solar calendar, but I didn’t find where it all started.

I use jam rather than jelly. Lately my favorite has been black mission fig jam. Jelly is just too loose for me

My mother always brought those crackers with her for our snacks when we traveled. I like butternut donuts best, but every now and then I treat myself with a Boston cream.
