This was one of my favorite Peter, Paul, and Mary songs. It was on their kids album that I played for my kids all the time. My other favorite song on that album was, “Right Field”. When I played in little league I always wound up playing right field and that song brought back memories.

I think it is their most beloved song. I laughed at the people who said it was about drugs.

I don’t remember their Right Field song, just John Fogerty.

The author claims it wasn’t about drugs, and I believe him. Also they found the ending that the author of the poem had left telling about a different end.
I believe the author, however when Peter, Paul and Mary released it, people took the meaning that they liked best.. in those times, and for years, we lived in a drug culture.
I can’t forgive Peter Yarrow, but that’s me.

It was written in 1962 and was released by PP&M in 1963. The drug culture hadn’t yet spread so I definitely believe Lenny Lipton.

I know his Vietnam visit merits scorn but his life as always been directed at doing good for the world to be a better place.
