“The color of springtime is in the flowers; the color of winter is in the imagination.”

Mother Nature can’t seem to make up her mind. When I woke up this morning, it was a brilliantly sunny day with a deep blue sky extending as far as I could see. When I looked again a bit later, the clouds had taken over the sky and the sun had disappeared. But a short while later, they came back: the sun and the blue, but they brought a few clouds with them. That has become the pattern. The sun comes and goes. The clouds come and go. It is cold, 27˚.

Yesterday we didn’t get much snow. I threw out deicer on the back steps so the dogs don’t slide. I wish I had done the same on the front steps. No, I neither fell nor slipped, but I had to walk gingerly and carefully over the step mats now frozen and covered in ice. It is a good thing I have nowhere to go. I also have no ambition so it all works out perfectly for me, the sloth.

When I was a kid, I loved Hostess cupcakes. I had a routine. The frosting used to come off in one piece, and I’d save it for last. I always ate around the middle cream. That was second to last. It was the best day if I found Hostess cupcakes in my lunch box. I think I squealed.

I usually have three or four kinds of cheese in the fridge. My favorite changes, but cheddar is always on the list. I like it in chucks so I can cut a piece off and eat it on the run. When I was a kid, I thought cheeses was only yellow. My mother bought it by the box and by the slice. The box cheese made the best grilled cheese sandwiches, melty and hot and oozing out of the sides of the bread. Slices were for sandwiches, bologna sandwiches. What’s funny is the bologna came in a roll and had to be sliced. I was never a good slicer.

My outside Christmas lights are lit every night. I was going to shut them down after Little Christmas, the Epiphany, but the lights scare away the night, scare away the darkness. The rest of Christmas is put away, only the snowmen remain. They’ll stay around all winter.

I still miss my usual cheese market stall with a great variety, they stopped selling when corona started. Basic cheeses like goat cheese and mountain cheese are easy to find elsewhere but I still miss cilantro cheese and had to switch to fenugreek cheese which is quite similar and also delicious.
First few snowflakes today but they didn’t really reach the ground. I would prefer more snow but at least biking was no problem.

      Hi Birgit,
It was cold all day long. The slush from yesterday has frozen in mounds. Walking is not easy and can be treacherous. I’m happy to be inside!

    Hello Kat,

Today has been cloudy with some fog and mist. It’s been in the mid 50s all afternoon. We got a slight amount of rain earlier this morning but not enough to put a dent in the drought. Basically, a dreary day.
Today we explored South Lake and drive by a house which was listed at over three and a half million dollars. It has 19,000 square feet of space and looks just like a medieval castle.

Hostess Chocolate cupcake were my favorite as a kid. I wasn’t as careful about eating them, I just opened wide and stuffed each one in the package with about three or four bites and they were gone in a few minutes. Today I’m more fond of Twinkies, but they don’t last any longer. I realize that the cream filling of both kinds of treats contains no dairy in them. I really don’t want to know what’s really in that recipe, but it’s good. 🙂

You mean cheese isn’t yellow? 🙂 I realized as an adult that the yellow in cheese is a dye to make the cheese appear more appetizing. My favorites are, American, Chedder, Swiss, especially Ementhaler, and Danish Havarti. Oops, I almost forgot Mozzarella, and Parmigiano Reggiano.

Some of my neighbors still have their Christmas lights up, but not illuminated. I never heard of, “Little Christmas”.

      Hi Bob,
It was cold all day today. The slush is frozen and walking is not easy! It means stepping softly and gently. I threw a pile of deicer on the front steps. I hope it helps. The back steps are down to wood and safe for the dogs.

I love the middles of the hostess products. I don’t care what the ingredients are. I used to buy the chocolate cupcakes also but mostly because they were 3 to a package.

Cheddar is the cheese I eat most frequently, but I loved them all except bleu, Roquefort and similar cheeses. I eat Swiss, but it hasn’t much of a taste compared to the others.

Little Christmas is another name for Three Kings’ Day or the Epiphany. It is when the Magi arrived in Bethlehem with their gifts.
