I don’t know why this song has become the anthem of New Year’s Eve. However, his version, which was broadcast on radio and later on TV from the ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria hotel, is the best and most traditional.

I totally agree with you about it having become the anthem of New Year’s Eve.
