Unfortunately, labor unions today have no power and little influence. This was a result of globalization and so called, “Right to Work” laws passed in Republican states to weaken unions. These laws prohibit non union workers from having to pay union dues.
Boeing is a perfect example. They built a huge plant to manufacture Boeing 787 airplanes in South Carolina. Although they still build them in Everett Washington, they will probably move out of that plant because the South Carolina workers make less money because they are not unionized. The good news is some airlines have refused to accept aircraft built in South Carolina due to quality issues.
In Boston, hotel workers from from hotel, I forget which, have been on struck for more than a year. They are protesting the small minimum age and the lack of a union to help them.
I don’t think anyone in my family belongs/belonged to a union. I was an administrator at a high school, and we did not have a union. The teachers did.
I hope more companies refuse to buy from plants not allowed to unionize.
I have also never worked where we had a union. Many of my coworkers are retired airline pilots who belonged to some kind of unions. Most of the legacy airlines such as Delta and United pilots are represented by ALPA (Airline Pilots Association). American’s pilots are represented by their own union, APA (Allied Pilots Association). In the 1960s American’s pilots belonged to ALPA, but they were out numbered by United Airlines pilots so they could never win the cushy national union jobs In Washington D.C. so they formed their own union.
Most of the airline guys I know are ultra conservative and are only interested in what pilot unions can do for pilots and the hell with anyone else. It’s like a union of millionaires. 🙂
There was a state administrator’s association to which all the administrators in my district were members as a group. They were not a union but offered advice if need be.

A lot of people are in it for themselves.

Sadly, I guess this TV commercial is being run today in Vietnam, China and Cambodia. 😦 Cheap is hard to beat.
