I remember “Duck and Cover” in school. Usually we did it in the corridor away from any windows. Unfortunately, if there was a direct nuclear attack it wouldn’t help at all. Just made us think that we had some protection.

I don’t think anyone had an idea exactly what would happen despite Hiroshima and Nagasaki. People took above ground testing as a fun way to spend some time. Families watched the bombs being detonated. Las Vegas gave out tourist pamphlets giving people the best places to view the tests. It was a lovely family outing.
