“I love sleep. My life has the tendency to fall apart when I’m awake, you know?”

Last night I slept like the dead. First I slept on the couch then I slept upstairs with two dogs at the foot of my bed. Sleeping like a log also came to mind. It fits with the topic under discussion, but I don’t know why. Logs sleeping? Maybe that’s from the old days when logs were floated down river. Sleep like a baby would be dismissed by new parents. My mother often accused the teenage me of sleeping my life away. She could lever the same maxim at me now. If I woke up grouchy, not enough sleep was the culprit. My favorite of them all was, “Sleep tight. Don’t the bedbugs bite.” That one scared me a little.

Today is a repetition of yesterday. It is damp and cloudy. The high will only be 72˚. When I went to get the papers, I was surprised at how warm the air felt so I left the front door open to the world. Outside is perfectly still for the meantime. The smallest of breezes appears only every now and then.

Today I have no plans except to do some stuff around the house. It is also time for laundry, step 2: bring the basket downstairs by the cellar door to make me feel guilty.

Nala is the first real counter surfer dog I’ve had. Shauna did it a couple of times, but counter food was safe from her. She preferred to trash pick. I have learned not to leave food on the counter, cooked food that is. But yesterday Nala did the unexpected. She stole unopened packages of the treats I had bought myself and ran outside before I knew to look there. Later she ate the cat treats behind what I thought was an impermeable wall, my own Maginot Line. The treats were hidden but Nala found them. The oven is my new go-to-stash container for everything except can goods and the stuff in the fridge. Nala hasn’t yet learned how to open the fridge, but she watches me every time, a sort of Hitchcock or King plot devise, or is it Hitchcokian and Kingish?

    Hi Kat,
Those food oriented dogs are really clever at getting at the hidden stash. Piki Dog once managed to find and eat 3.5 ounces of Cadbury mini eggs. The candy bag was in the bottom of a zippered tote bag which was up against the wall and the couch, had two other bags in front of it and one bag on top of it. That was a late night trip to the emergency vet. He vomited in the car which smelled like cocoa for a long time afterwards. He had his stomach pumped. I had my bank account seriously reduced. Now treats go inside the microwave or the fridge.
It was another murky day up here. All the lights are on. I haven’t seen any rain yet but the day is not over.

      Hi Caryn,
Gracie only stole the bottoms of meat cartons from the trash bag I’d leave on the floor until dump time and then she’d skip out the door before I even knew. Nala steals everything. I am now using my oven as a Nala-Free pantry. I hated that she stole my cookies. I really wanted a bit of chocolate. I didn’t go in the back yard today to clean up her trash. I’ll have to tomorrow.

Shauna ate a several Easter chocolate rabbits I was hiding in the closet. The cat opened the closet door and Shauna munched. She was okay though, she was too big for the chocolate to cause problems said the vet. Shaun also figured out how to open the cupboard door where her treats were. Clever dog that Shauna.

I just ordered some groceries including cookies. I am happy tonight!!

I had a big beast who went through a candy dish of Hershey’s Kisses, leaving only the foil in a neat pile. Milk chocolate + big dog = not much of a problem, though I wonder if he felt a little funny afterwards. I once saw a great video series on the web by a veterinary clinic that did a segment on chocolate poisoning. Really interesting. (All the stuff was worth watching.)

        Rowen,
The dog leaving the foil gave me a good laugh. That was a smart dog. Gracie used to leave the peas from her food on the inside ring of her dish, one circled after the other. It was amazing.

If I need to know something more about what my dog has, I’ll look it up. I don’t think Id like to watch a video series.

We ‘sleep like a stone’ which makes sense I think. Unfortunately I had to get up quite early this morning and didn’t sleep like a stone. The Sandman usually puts kids to sleep. Hey, Mr. Sandman, give me a dream… Well, it’s actually just Sandman, not Mr. Sandman, a tiny man with a hat. Lucky teenagers, here the only ‘sleep the day away’, not the whole life.
Heavy rain is predicted for tomorrow, something between just wet and flooding disaster. We’ll see. Speaking of language, we just call this kind of weather un-weather.

      Birgit,
I think people use sleep like a stone too. It probably is different across the country. We had the sandman too, just the sandman. I think the bed bug one was peculiar to my mother’s family. My mother never bothered me about getting up if I had no school the next day. My summer job started at noon.

Rain has been predicted for the last few and the next two. By Thursday or Friday, the heat will be back.

      I like that, un-weather.

    Hi Kat,

I usually will sleep very soundly and according to my wife noisily. πŸ™‚

Dogs are very smart and will eat almost anything. You are going to have to put non perishable anything edible or even inedible on the top shelves of your kitchen cabinets. So, buy a good sturdy ladder and hope your balance remains steady. Otherwise, you are going to have a fat and or a sick dog.

We are having a reprive from the rain through this weekend with below normal temperatures in the low 90s. I may actually get my car washed. Nah, that will only bring more rain. πŸ™‚

      Hi Bob,
I don’t hear usual noises when I sleep but I do hear odd, out of place music which I usually dismiss if the dogs don’t bark.

Everything is put away now. I was putting groceries away when she stole bagels and I was preoccupied, but I knew when she went outside I needed to follow her. Yup, bagel bag in her mouth a while before she gave it to me. The bag was still sealed, unopened. Even the plastic thing was still attached.

      We are still in drought condition despite the rain. It hasn’t been near enough. In the 70’s and humid today;

Hot and damp yesterday and some thunder as well, today will be hot and damp but perhaps without the thunder. I don’t mind the thunder since it cools down the world so nicely.

Alma doesn’t reach well enough to steal the food but she has tried and she loves to go thropugh the trash, like last night. I had to clean the entire downstairs before I went back to bed.

I do hope Nala doesn’t figure out how to open the fridge! My old Viran did and she destroyed tthree of tthem πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ No matter how I tried to make it Viran safe she still managed to open them up.

    Have a great day!

    Christer.

      Hi Christer,
Today is hot and humid. Thunder showers tomorrow. The heat is coming in the next few days, back to the 80’s.

Nala went through the trash in the kitchen while I was in the living room. She was quiet. I heard her trying to pull something through the dog door so I checked. I ended up cleaning all the trash Nala had brought outside. I also had to clean up coffee grounds in the kitchen. This is my first dog who steals from the counter, but she joins Gracie in the trash category.

I think this fridge would be difficult as it is a pull out with an inset door opener. I have put all the treats up quite high. She ate the cats’ treats which I put on the stairs. I found the package outside. She is a stealthy thief.

      Enjoy the day!

My Viran destroyed three fridges so she could get inside, I’ve learned to never underestimate a dog ecer again πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

That’s unbelievable. Now I’ll definitely watch Nala. What she wants she gets.
