Between 1973 and 1977 I was working at the Bank of England in the long since defunct Exchange Control Department which regulated the movement of cash in and out of the UK
Ol’ Chuck came to our attention as he insisted in being paid in cash which required special permission – he got it.
So if you hear stories of Chuck Berry being paid with a briefcase full of money, usually before the show – it was true. When it was time for an encore, he expected a few dollars more to go back on

I did not know this. Did you venture a guess why? I do think it a bit petty to request more money for an encore.
