This was from the musical Damn Yankees. The story is that the manager of the Washington Senators baseball team makes a deal woohoo the devil to beet the Yankees for his soul. The old saying was, “Washington, first in war, first in peace and last in the American League”. Now the new Washington Nationals won the World Series last year in playing in the National League.
Unfortunately, the last iteration of the Washington Senators, became the Texas Rangers 48 years ago and the Rangers still haven’t won the World Series. Damn curse of the Senators. 😦
I’ve seen Damn Yankees a couple of times. The last time was at the Cape Playhouse about 5 years ago. It was excellent. The Cape Playhouse is the oldest, continuous summer theater in the country. I hated that they had to cancel the season, but I rolled over my ticket $ for next year.
I liked the name of the Washington Senators. It was apt. There were two teams of Senators. One became the Rangers and the other became the Twins.
He is wrong. I saw many TV and film actors and many others from Broadway shows where they had originated the roles I was watching. It is considered by many to be the premier summer theater.

A friend of mine used to refer to summer stock as summer schlock. 🙂
