Because the Wright brothers were bicycle mechanics they discovered on of the most important aerodynamic properties. Other experimenters were trying to make their aircraft extremely stable in the roll axis and then use the rudder to steer the airplane similar to steering a boat. The Wrights realized that a less stable but balanced approach like riding a bicycle would work best. They discovered that banking the wings to change direction worked similar to leaning a bicycle when turning.

I knew they made bicycles, but I never thought about what that made. It’s good to know.
