Trenton Lee Stewart quote

The station wagon was the automotive expression of the suburban lifestyle of the 50s. My father bought my mother a 1958 Rambler Station wagon. It was one of the first smaller American cars. It had reclining front seats, factory air conditioning and a push button automatic transmission.

That’s amazing: that in 1958 your mother’s car had all those perks, especially AC. I don’t remember when my mother’s and father’s cars got AC, but I’m thinking the 60’s.
I have seen a few Ramblers. They do have an odd shape, interesting but still odd.

When we moved to Texas in 1953 my father bought a new Buick Special in NYC. He had a local company in Dallas install the AC. This unit was so powerful you could hang meat in the car in 100°+ temperatures. The blowers and evaporator was located in the trunk and the cold air came out of vents mounted in the rear package shelf through clear plastic tubes. The tubes directed the air over the head and necks of the rear seat passengers.
His 1958 Buick Century was the first car he bought with factory installed AC.

I can understand needing air in Texas. When you mention temperatures in the high 90’s, I am so glad I live here. Right now my AC is running. I didn’t turn it on until later in the afternoon. I was surprised to see it was 78˚ when I did. To me, that is hot!

In the winter it rarely snows and seldom goes below 20° F, Hawaii would be nice. Average temperature year round but you have to put up with earthquakes and volcanoes. 🙂 Texas in the summer is a combination of AC and swimming pools.

I don’t mind the winter. I hunker down when out gets really cold. Actually, it doesn’t often get colder than 20˚ except for a deep freeze which comes periodically. IN Augiust, it will get hot here.
