“The truth is that everyone is bored, and devotes himself to cultivating habits.”
The heat will be around all week. The humidity will return tomorrow. Yesterday, the house got hot, 77˚, so the AC ran all afternoon into the evening. When I needed my sweatshirt, I knew the house was cold enough. Upstairs, though, stayed warm. I arranged my hand fan on the bed so my face got the breeze. I fell asleep.
The sun was shining when I woke up, but it has since disappeared behind clouds. The day is a bit darker, but no rain is predicted, just heat. There is an every now and then breeze but in-between the leaves are still. According to the forecast, the sun will be back. It will be another hot day. I’m keeping my sweatshirt handy.
I’m going to buy the rest of my deck flowers today. They’ll be planted tomorrow. After that will be the grand opening of the deck. I’ll play some John Philip Souza and wave flags.
When I was growing up, we all got measles and maybe chicken pox. If one kid got it, we all got it. I remember the itch of the chicken pox. I had the measles when I was about nine or ten. I didn’t get the mumps. Before we could go to school, we had to have a smallpox vaccine shot. Mine was on my upper leg but some of my friends got it on their upper arms. It made an ugly scar.
I was okay for the first couple of months, but I suspect if you now check the dictionary for the definition of bored you’ll see a picture of me yawning. My days really are boring. I clean a little, and I read a lot. I finished another book last night. I watch TV but not so much, mostly movies. I watch for maybe fifteen or twenty minutes then I get bored again. My Netflix roll of movies for Kathleen to continue watching is long.
I’ve already dust mopped the floor. I did it on my way back from the kitchen. I never do just one thing anymore. If I go upstairs, I clean the table on the way and then the stairs on the way down. I hate cleaning.
I am going out today!

Hi Kat,
You think you’re bored? I’m going out of my mind with boredom. At least you have had practice by being retired. I’ve decided that I’m never going to completely retire as long I can physically do the work. We have had instructors work into their 80s. The last one was let go because he made some racist remarks in class in front of clients. I knew he had these racist ideas which he expressed to me personally, but I always thought he could keep them to himself. He couldn’t and was fired. We’re a global corporation based in Montreal Canada and they take diversity very seriously. He was a retired General in the Texas Air National Guard and of course a lifelong Republican and a big Trumpster. 😦
Hopefully, this will be my last furlough week and I return to work next Monday.
Because our idiot Republican Governor opened up the state even more in the last couple of weeks and because of all the protests, Dallas and Tarrent counties (Dallas and Ft. Worth) have seen a spike in Corona virus cases in the last several days. The Dallas County Commissioner is calling it a second wave and has mandated wearing masks in public with a fine to businesses who don’t comply. Our governor said last week that counties can’t mandate masks and that they are optional for people to decide to wear one or not. Public health is being politicized since Dallas County is run by Democrats. Also, the governor said that he doesn’t care how many cases there are as long as there are enough hospital beds available. I assume he also doesn’t care how many people die either. 😦
We had thunderstorms the last couple of nights which gave us much needed rain. The forecast high temperature today won’t even get to 90 degrees. 🙂

Hi Bob,
Pre covid, it didn’t take much to stave off boredom. There were lots of things to do and places to go. Now, that is all changed. Retirement didn’t prepare me for pretty much being stuck inside for nearly three months. I am glad I retired early. The guy deserved to be fired.
Besides Texas, I see the covid numbers going up elsewhere in the south and the west. Only a vaccine will stop this. Our numbers have been going down steadily, and it had to do with when the state was shut and to what extent. The governor did a good job. People hated it but agreed it was what had to happen. We started phase 2 today.
Some parts of the state got torrential downpours which flooded streets. We got no rain at all, and we really need rain. None is predicted for the rest of the week.
We were in the 70’s today, but the humidity made it uncomfortable.

Hi Kat,
I’m not bored exactly. I’ve been retired for 10 years so I have perfected the art of doing nothing and not feeling guilty about it. Right now I’m frustrated that any trip out involves pre-planning almost to the level of a commando raid. It takes all the joy out of going for a drive and deciding to stop for pizza or ice cream. I could pretend that there is no risk but that would be stupid.
My entertainment today was doing dishes and throwing the laundry bag down the cellar stairs. After that, I sat and read The Lord of the Rings with short breaks to attend to the dogs wants and needs. They have been content to nap on the couch and bark at things that pass by.
Today has been pretty good up here. It started out foggy with drippy bits included but cleared up after a few hours. The sun is warm but there is a lovely cool breeze to offset that. The hot stuff comes back again tomorrow.
Enjoy the day.

Hi Caryn,
I didn’t get bored right away. It took months of staying inside and having nothing change. I have been reading a lot. My Kindle is full. I’m happy for that. I didn’t go out today, but I did the trash and changed my bed. That was enough for one day.
I am rereading The Ugly America. It has been so long since I first read it I don’t remember much of it. My laundry pile has just about hit the must wash height. Late in the week.
My house was hot. I was sweating and Henry was panting. I turned the air, and he is asleep on the couch. Jack is asleep behind me on the back of the couch. They make me tired.
Have a great evening!
