“A lawn is nature under totalitarian rule.”

Last night it rained, pretty much the whole night. It is still cloudy, and the humidity is hanging in the air. It is dump day.

My father loved his lawn, and my mother loved her small flower garden. The first time they came to see my new house my father brought his garden tools and some plants for the front garden. My mother and I went shopping. When we got home, my father gave us the grand tour from front to back. The lawn in front had been easy. He had mowed it and trimmed the beds. But when he saw the back, he complained because it had grown totally out of control. It was so tall it was a field which I didn’t think needed mowing. I never really thought of it as a lawn. Who saw it anyway? My father was quite proud of having cleared that area near the house. The grass had disappeared in a wide swath. He told me to keep it clear. I sort of did.

I was so happy to see my cleaning couple yesterday. My house is now clean, all of it, every nook, every corner. When I walk, no balls of dust are dislodged. None of the rugs are covered in fur. Everything was polished so I can’t write on the tables anymore. They arrived at just the right moment. I don’t know if I could have wielded another mop without screaming.

After the dump, I’m headed to Agway to buy my window box flowers and herbs. I love wandering the aisles there. I find what I want but then I end up buying far more. I’ll plant them another day.

Really nice weather over here today, mostly sunny, just enough warm but the wind is a bit strong but liuke warm. The kitchen door is still open even if the clock has passed 8 pm.

It is so dry here that most of the grass doesn’t grow, spots here and there so I don’t feel mowing is a high priority right now. I do have to water all pots and my potatoes though. <I think all potatoes I planted has leafs now, I wonder if it will be only much greenery and no potatoes or the opposite when that day comes πŸ™‚

    Have a great day!

    Christer.

      Christer,
The sun came out and the day got hotter. When I went to the dump, I put on the car’s air conditioner. When I got home, the house was hot so I put on the air conditioner. It is quite pleasant now.

My grass could use some help. It has bare spots. My landscaper always takes good care of it so I suspect he’ll get on it with fertilizer. I didn’t get to the garden shop after all today. I need to go tomorrow. Some of my perennial herbs are back so I’m happy with that.

      Enjoy your weekend!

    Hi Kat,

I think lawn care is carried on the Y chromosome. πŸ™‚ My father was very proud that his St. Augustine lawn was as thick as a carpet which also kept the weeds out. When I was doing my own lawn care the grass just died. I think I have a purple thumb. 😦 My next door neighbor owned a lawn care business and felt sorry for me. He agreed to have his crew cut my grass when they did his for $50 a month in the 80s. From then on I never took care of my grass myself and hired experts which made it looked great.

Today is a repeat of yesterday just a typical hot, dry summer day. We haven’t hit the century mark yet.

      Hi Bob,
When I was a kid, the lady up back with whom we shared a hill in the backyard was lawn crazy. She yelled if anyone got close to her part of the hill. She drove us crazy, but she did have great grass.

The only thing I generally do is buy the plants. My landscaper takes care of the lawn and bushes. Last year I ended up doing the deck boxes, and it wasn’t a big deal. This year I have a new factotum.

The sun came out, and it got hot, 74˚. My house was quite warm so I turned on the air just to cool the house. It feels good.

Now lawn mowing yet, it doesn’t grow very fast without rain. It’s a mix of grass, moss and weed anyway and the weed looks nice when it flowers. Yesterday I found a young dead rabbit in the garden and I buried it, it was sad to see the tiny body. The raspberries and white currants in the garden are ripe now and we’ll have many cherries, gooseberries and blackberries later this year. Unfortunately not a single black currant and not so many red currants and apples this time.

      Birgit,
My lawn has just started growing enough to need mowing. There are even dandelions in one part. I have an irrigation system which keeps my grass and flowers from getting too thirsty.

Poor baby rabbit. I saw a baby rabbit the other day. It is the first I’ve seen in a while. It was too cute eating my grass. Maybe I don’t need it mowed. That baby could finish off my lawn in a month or two.

The only berries growing are the strawberries I planted last year. I thought they’d died, but they have flowers this year. I was so excited when I saw those flowers!

    Hi Kat,
Tired today as usual. When my father designed our house he didn’t put a lawn in ( unlike everyone else who lived in the small estate. He used pebbles and wood chips ( I think ) making it a Japanese lawn. It was not popular in those days.
    Take Care,
    Lori and the gang

      Hi Lori,
Lots of houses here do not have lawns. Some have white seashell shards. Others have pine needles. The lawns take a lot of care. I just write the check!
