I remember those garbage trucks. They were really a mobile trash compactor on wheels. Today, everyone has plastic garbage receptacles that have wheels. When the truck pulls up to your house, the truck has a built in lift that attaches to the can and lifts it up and dumps the trash into the truck. One truck with one driver needed.

My neighbor worked on a garbage truck. Every now and then he’d be in the neighborhood. We always went out and waved.
I saw a truck in the city doing what you described. Around here men still dump the trash into the truck. Local communities on the cape do not trash collect. Private companies do, but I haven’t seen any of them using that sort of truck.
