Kids today have no idea that the first two digits of telephone numbers represented the name of the telephone company’s exchange. The reason they only had 7 digits is because that’s about as many numbers and letters that’s easy to remember.
Today without the first three numbers which is the area code, that number would be 234-5789.
I remember when my exchange was ST 8. I remember when it was changed to all numbers. Down here we had our area code changed about ten years back. They had run out of numbers at the 617 area code so my sister ended up with 781 and I got 508.
