“How could such sweet and wholesome hours be reckoned, but in herbs and flowers?”
The sky is mostly cloudy. It’s warm, already 66ห. Last night I left my bedroom window open. I fell asleep to the sound of crickets and katydids.
I have no to do list today. Yesterday the only thing I did was dry mop the rooms on this floor. I do need to wash the kitchen floor so maybe I’ll do that today, but I’m not making a list.
Yesterday I watched movies. Some were really bad, but they helped pass the time. I’m beginning to run out of ways to entertain myself. Cleaning isn’t one of the options.
This is the week for me to buy my flowers. I need a few perennials for the front garden, but I mostly need herbs and flowers, many flowers, for the deck boxes. I also need potting soil. I love to flower shop. I show no restraint.
When I was a kid, we used to go to the drive-in just about every Saturday night. I wore my pajamas, most kids did. My father always brought plenty of movie food. I loved his popcorn. It always had plenty of butter. The first movie was always for kids, but I usually stayed awake through both movies.
Much later, when I was an adult, my friends and I went to the Dennis Drive-in. It was a small theater. It was surrounded on three sides by trees and woods. There were berms between each row. The car sort of climbed to the parking space. There were always mosquitos. We brought our own version of movie treats. We had champagne, crackers, cheese and usually chocolates. The drive-in movie is making a comeback. Wellfleet still has one. I’m thinking the drive-in may just be a good way to spend a warm summer evening with adult treats, of course, though Ill probably add popcorn.

Hi Kat,
We used to go to the drive-in in North Reading. Yes, we wore our pajamas as did a lot of the kids there. I know this because there was a playground up front underneath the screen and lots of pj clad kids would be there playing on the equipment. If we weren’t asleep after the movie, sometimes our parents would take us up the road to Kitty’s for pizza and orangeade. They had beer. I still remember summer Fridays as pizza and orangeade night.
My only task for today was to take Rocky to the vet for shots. We all went. Piki Dog volunteered to stand on the scale. Rocky did not. After that we went to the lake. First time in weeks we’ve been allowed to park there. What a treat. They spent the rest of the day sleeping and I spent it reading. Also a treat.
The day started out murky but it burned off by 9AM and got warm. But there’s nice breeze and the house has remained cool. I’m not looking forward to AC season.
Enjoy the evening.

Hi Caryn,
We usually went to the Lowe’s Drive in in Burlington, right off Rt. 128. My grandfather had a pass, and we always used it for free admission. We did go to North Reading a few times. Was the road to get in a bit steep?
Henry needs to go to the vets. He needs a heart worm test and to have his nails cut. I hate it having him be is scared in the car. Right now he is quite comfy on the couch beside me.
The house here stayed cool though it was warm out, high 60’s. Right now is the prettiest it has been all day. The sun is bright shiny through the backyard.
Have a wonderful evening1

I didn’t immediately remember the drive-in road as being steep. But now that you mention it, I do remember the road out as being sort of steep. It looked steeper when one was waiting in the line of traffic at the bottom.
Have you tried sedating him with peanut butter? ๐
Seriously, Teddy All Natural Superchunky (AKA puppy crack) was the only thing that allowed me to give Piki Dog his monthly injections for 11 months of MUE treatments. Now I take a small 2 oz cup of it with me when he has to have something done by the vet.
If you try this, be sure the peanut butter you use has no added sugar or xylitol in it. Xylitol is poison to dogs.

Caryn,
I have a sedative for him, but it is for longer trips, like to visit my friends in New Hampshire. I never tried peanut butter except to disguise his pills. I already have Teddy, but I don’t think it is the Superchunky. I’ll buy some and give it a try. I would love if it were that easy.

Drive-in movies are also coming back here after they were nearly gone. It wasn’t big here anyway but it’s good idea in corona times, some of them are also used for live concerts and comedy shows. I read that a temporary drive-in movie even popped up just about half a mile from my home. It would be a nice change but I don’t have a car ๐

Birgit,
When I was a kid, we were within driving distance of four drive-in movies theaters. None of them exist any more. The two which were near me here on the cape are also gone. I always liked going to those movies.

Hi Kat,
When I was a kid we never went to the drive-in movies because my parents thought it was too hot and uncomfortable here in Texas. For a couple of years we lived in an apartment complex behind a drive in movie theater. We could see the movie through breaks in the fence but where too far away to hear the sound.
In college my roommate and I would take our dates to the drive-in but rarely watched the film. I think they used to call it โwatching submarine racesโ. ๐
The last drive-in movie in Dallas was completely surrounded by trees and the showed X-rated films until they closed in the late 70s. ๐
Another cloudy humid day without rain. Highs only in the seventies.

Colleges in those days didnโt have coed dormitories. ๐

No, but I suspect there were plenty of secluded spots on campus.

Hi Bob,
The cars in the back row at the drive-in always had steamed windows. When I was little, my brother and I always sneaked a look.
You’re right about the submarine races.
Nice ๐ day today!
