“Chocolate symbolizes, as does no other food, luxury, comfort, sensuality, gratification, and love.”

When I was young and before I could read, my mother would read Henny Penny to me. That was one of my favorite books, a Golden Book maybe. I think it’s an odd science fiction story and is probably the reason I’ve always loved science fiction. I’d make my mother read it over and over. Henny Penny is the story of mass hysteria and the disaster which followed. I didn’t remember the animals, other than Henny Penny, were eaten by Foxy-loxy. That was a shock. I’m wondering if this is a metaphor, a parable or just a kid’s story.

I noticed a house up the street has lit white lights on its fence. My big star and its trail of lights along the deck fence are also lit. Both houses are sparkling in the night. I think they have a cozy feel about them. They are my bright spot.

My laundry basket is filled again. My bed is stripped and not yet made. I didn’t go to the dump the other day because of the rain so much of my trash is already in the car. The den, the hall and the route to the stairs were filled with clumps of dust and fur. A couple of clumps were so big I wondered if aliens had disguised themselves. They could live for weeks in my house without ever being caught. I won’t look under the bed.

Last night I had another uke lesson. One of the songs was new, and I couldn’t get my three fingers to work their chords. I’m going to spend the weekend practicing that song.

Today is cold but lovely. The sun is shining, and the sky is filled with puffy clouds. I haven’t been outside in weeks so I’m excited to go to the dump and to Rings for a few groceries as my list has gotten long. I need bread and milk and chocolate, lots of chocolate.

    Hi Kat,

I assume the uke lesson was virtual and didn’t require close contact. Yesterday evening we were under a tornado watch but we didn’t even get one drop of rain. Thankfully, the cap, a temperature inversion between 5,000 and 18,000 ft above, held in our area. But, about 100 miles north of us in Oklahoma it broke, and they got hit by severe thunderstorms. Today it’s clear and very comfortable at about 80 degrees with low humidity.

Another day of boredom. Our routine to get out of the house is to pick up some lunch and then sit in the car while watching Netflix while eating.

I’m very concerned about small business in this country. I read this morning that a woman who owns a hair salon in East Dallas is going to open up on Friday regardless of the rules. She paid her business’ rent in April by not paying her home mortgage. She said if she doesn’t open on Friday there will be no business to open next month. Her stylists will practice extream sanitation procedures and customers will be served one at a time by appointment only. I don’t go along with the liberate the states nut cases, but something has to be done to save small mom and pop stores. My spouse had a crown come off her tooth and the dentist came in to the office on an emergency basis to cement in the crown. Dentists can only open for emergencies.

      Hi Bob,
We did the zoom thing. We all checked into the room with the password we had been sent. It worked great. We could see the instructor and the other uke players, but we could only hear our teacher. She had muted all of us. That was fine. I could concentrate on her and her finger spots.

I went out today. I took a ride. I went to the dump and I went to Ring to pick up a few things. It was nice being out for a while. It was a bit sunny.

I feel concerned about small businesses as well. The cape has many seasonal shops and motels which provide the yearly income for the owners. They won’t be able to pay their bills. I don’t even want to think about the ramifications here.

    Hey Kat,
I am locked down. Pacing around trying to work and keep things moving. The days are unbearably long made worse by snow over night and a sump pump that stopped working and flooded my basement.
Mrs MDH has announced that I can never retire, that tells you everything
Tomorrow I will head to the office at 5 am to get some things done. It will make a change I guess, I will see no one and be home by 9 am

I am trying to get to the end of an incredibly dull book, it might just be me

    Stay safe

      My Dear Hedley,
My mother used to say the same thing about my father. He did drive her crazy for a while, but they eventually found a middle ground. I think it had to do with never bothering her again.

I am not one to lecture but I do think this is a good time to figure out being retired and to practice not working.

I’d be ashamed to tell you much Lindt dark chocolate mousse I’ve consumed in the last three days, Kat. (They were on sale the last time I ventured out for groceries, so I scooped up six of them. I did leave two others for the next chocoholic, which I thought was quite noble of me.)

I do feel for small business owners, many of which are likely to end up folding, but I’m more concerned about the last month of physical isolation being a wasted exercise if everything starts to open up too early. The sacrifices we’ve all made trying to get this virus under control may end up being for nought.

I just finished re-reading John Wyndham’s ‘The Day of the Triffids.’ It seemed appropriate somehow and I did enjoy it, but it’s a shame that the enjoyment of a good adventure story had to be somewhat lessened by the annoying dialogue that accompanied the obligatory romance. 😉

Now I’m off to watch ‘No Blade of Grass’ which I taped on TCM. It’s a 1970 film about the anarchy which results after a virus wipes out the world’s crops. Good fun!

    Take care!

      Hi Marie,
I bought scones and muffins and two candy bars. Everything is gone. I had the candy last night and the scone after dinner, the muffin this morning. Now I have nothing left so I’m moaning.

I am watching MSNBC and am appalled by the governors willing to open without a decrease numbers across the country. The virus will not go away easily but social distancing has been a success. Governor Kemp is an idiot who should walk around his state without protection.

I read Day of the Triffids years ago and have seen the movie, the older movie. Try that.

Great time to catch up on movies and books. Enjoy!!

      Stay well!
