“Isn’t it interesting that the same people who laugh at science fiction listen to weather forecasts and economists.”
The day is quite lovely and warmish. I stayed out for a little while to check the front garden. I didn’t see any more green shoots but I know the snowdrops are usually first so I’ll keep my eye on their corner of the garden.
I was surprised to see buds on the cactus hanging by the kitchen window. It will flower for the first time so it’s an Easter cactus, color still unknown.
Despite the rain and the warmer weather, snow is still around, mostly in the shade. My backyard has some beneath the pine trees. It has outlasted its welcome.
I’m watching Monsters from Green Hell, a 1958 science fiction film in black and white. The plot is simple. A rocket was sent into space carrying insects in an attempt to test the possibility of manned flights. It malfunctions and lands off the coast of Africa. Wasps from the rocket were exposed to radiation and have become giant insects. The film alternates between real settings and painted backdrops. An actual film inserted into the action shows animals fleeing from the watering hole and tribesmen with shields and spears in hand running. That’s where reality ended. The wasp chasing them is silly looking and moves as if it is on wheels. Its eyes are mesh and its front leg looks like a crab claw, all the better to pick up victims. I like this movie for the chance to step back in to the 50’s. Our hero is using an ashtray on a metal stand. One of my grandparents had one. The Hollywood Africans are wearing straw hats more Hawaiian than African. The safari has to walk 400 miles into the jungle. That’s where we are now.
My dance card is empty until Sunday. I could do my laundry I suppose. Nah.

It feels like it but its not quite there – the skies are clear blue but the temperatures remain stubbornly in the 40s. Thursday will bring 60s and storms. I have been emailing my sprinkler peoples and landscaping peoples and getting ready to get the season going. I would be nice to get some things done by Easter.
I am focused on the Old Country this afternoon where the next round of the Brexit disaster will take place. Two years of “effort” with no consensus. Ms May is back with exactly the same deal that got pounded a month ago and faces a similar humiliation tonight. then what ? a general election ? another referendum ? a costly extension ? Your guess is as good as mine
I was checking upcoming flights to make sure I am not riding on a 737. Im not.

Hedley, I’m just listening to the Brexit debate too. No guess from me either.

My Dear Hedley,
When the cape gets to the mid-50’s, it is spring to me. The ocean keeps us chilly usually into May, sometimes late May and early June. My landscaper comes when he figures he needs to come, the same with my sprinkler man. With Easter in late April this year, I figure the yard will be cleared by then.
I wonder if the average person didn’t go through Brexit as closely as they should have. I think there were surprises after the vote as to what was going to happen once England pulled out. It is quite the mess.
The flight to Ghana on Delta uses a 767-300ER.

I wouldn’t worry about flying in a B737 Max 8. I don’t know about the crew of the Lion Air flight that crashed in Indonesia, but the copilot on the Ethiopian airliner had a total of 250 total flying hours.
I hope the U.K. suffers a huge economic disaster from Brexit. It was based on jingoism and prejudice against Eastern Europeans moving to the U.K. to work. Here’s a brilliant idea, let’s divorce ourselves from our major trading partners on the continent who compromise 40% of our trade. Amsterdam is have an economic boom from companies leaving the U.K. in droves before the ax falls on March 29th. Airbus has already said that they will move all airplane parts production out of the U.K. if there is a hard Brexit.

Bob,
The reenactments I saw had the plane flying up and down until the nose was down for good. Maybe the black box will give a better understanding of what happened.
I guess it is the coincidence of the two planes crashing which has people afraid to fly those particular planes.
The whole withdrawal is a mess. Many of the people didn’t realize what withdrawing would mean economically. They’ll know soon enough.

Hi Kat,
Most of the snow is still around up here. It has been warm and sunny so there is melting but not on the places where there are flowers. Probably the skunk cabbage is melting its way through the snow down in the swamp but that’s about it. Inside the house, though, two of my four orchids are setting buds and one of them has a flower. They are in the completely wrong window for any of that to be happening but whatever floats their boat. I’m not telling them how to be orchids.
It is sunny and 40ºF but the wind is very chilly. It feels a lot colder than it looks.
Enjoy the evening.

Hi Caryn,
The yard hasn’t any flowers yet, but I need to check where the snowdrops are to see if they are up and on their way. They are first so their arrival will give me hope for spring’s arrival.
That cactus surprised me as it has never bloomed. Whatever I did or didn’t do worked. I wish I knew what it was which caused the miracle.
I only went out this morning for the paper. The house was cold so I turned up the heat for a while. I saw the TVqweather and it is cold down here y but 10˚. It is that darn ocean!~
Have a great evening!

My cactus would bloom only after I had withheld water for a month or so. I assumed it thought it was going to die during that time so, when the water did finally come, it put forth flowers so that it wouldn’t become an unsuccessful life form. Lately it has not been responding to that ploy. It’s over 50 years old. Perhaps it has figured me out. 🙂

I think you are supposed to withhold water and keep the cactus in a cool place.
My mother had one which was around 50 too. My sister gave it to her for Christmas one year. My other sister took it so I don’t know its fate.

I think all snow is gone here now after a day with wind, rain and above freezing temperatures and I don’t miss it at all. The gravel roads are messy though and even worse here at home after a couple of timber lorries has passed by.
I saw cranes for the first time on my way to work, around 15 flew just above my car and it did feel as if we actually will get some spring soon 🙂 Geese and swans never give me that feeling.
Have a great day!
Christer.

Christer,
There is still snow, but the next few days are supposed to be really warm so I figure the snow will disappear.
We have robins which stay around all winter so seeing one doesn’t mean they’re back for spring. Because of the ocean, spring sort of sneaks up on us.
Have a great day!
