“The poetry of the earth is never dead.”
It poured yesterday, but last night didn’t get cold enough to freeze. Today is relatively warm, and the temperature will hit the high 40’s. The sky was cloudy earlier but now blue is peeking through, and I swear I saw sunlight. We’re in a warm day-cold night cycle. It will get to the low 30’s tonight.
When I went to get the papers, I saw the green shoots in the front garden are taller. I know they are a long way from buds and blooming but just seeing them is a hopeful sign. Spring is coming.
When I was a kid, I loved days like today. It was as if the whole world was starting over. The air smelled fresh. The dirt was soft, almost planting ready. I didn’t dress in layers. I didn’t need a hat or mittens. I think I skipped to school, a sort of bouncing celebration.
During recess, groups of girls, never boys, jumped rope. I remember the two rope swingers and a line of jumpers waiting their turns. We had sing songy rhymes and most of them sped up at the end when the rope swingers went faster and faster, “Janey and Johnny sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G.” We played different rope games. Sometimes the line, one at a time, took turns jumping in and out. Other times two of us were jumping together. That took talent. I remember standing beside the swinging rope waiting for just the right spot in time to jump in and then out. Jump ropes with wooden handles were prime stocking stuffers.
Today I’m watching disaster movies. So far the count is two meteors, an earthquake and a new ice age. The plot of each movie differs only in the method of destruction. The ending is the same. Earth always survives.

Both boys and girls jumped rope in my school and I do remember how fun it was. Today I probably wouldn’t do especially well at all 🙂 🙂
We’re in a cold night cold day period but it will change from tomorrow they say to warmer days and not so cold nights. The lilacs leaf buds are getting bigger but the flower ones are still hidden.
Have a great day!
Christer.

Christer,
I like jumping rope except when the really fast jumping was done. There was so little time between the jumps that it was tiring.
Our nights will continue to be in the 30’s, the low thirties. We are a long way from spring.
None of the trees have buds and won’t for a few months yet. The bulbs will be the first things to bloom. I’m just keeping an eye on this shoots
Enjoy your day!

Hi Kat,
I don’t think kids today jump rope or play stick ball, nor stoop ball or any other physical activity that’s not team based. All the kids are glued to their phones or iPads. In aviation we call this new computer GPS generation, “children of the magenta”. Magenta because the course calculated from the flight management computer appears as a magenta line on the flight instruments. 🙂 Without the Magenta line they can’t navigate and have difficulty flying the airplane manually using either radio navigation or just pilotage, looking out the window. 🙂
It didn’t rain this morning on the way to work nor has it started to rain yet. It’s 60 degrees which is about 15 degrees Celsius. Tomorrow and Wednesday we should have storms.

Bob,
The kids on my street do play basketball as two of the houses have hoops. They also ride bikes and scooters but not yet, mostly in the warmer season. I haven’t seen them on phones so I don’t think they have them. Each house down the street has four kids and giving each of them a phone would be expensive but in the house next to me, the 10 year old does have a phone, but amazingly, he is also a book reader. Many parents see phones for their kids as added safety. They know where the kids are because of apps and the kids can call home of there are any problems.
I do also hate that you see so many kids on their phones ignoring the world around them.
