“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.”
Snow is on the ground but only a little. It isn’t as high as the tops of my shoes. The snow is heavy and made a crunching sound when I walked on it. I went to get the papers, but I couldn’t find them. I suspect they aren’t there. The papers are usually wrapped in colored plastic which is easy to see so I walked around the front garden and the car expecting to find them. I was disappointed.
Henry likes the snow. He has been out so many times I’m happy he has a dog door. I watched him leap and run when he first got to the yard at the bottom of the steps. He licks the snow.
It has stopped snowing. Where Henry walked is no longer covered by snow. My fronts steps are getting icy. I’ll have to throw down the deicer on both sets of stairs, front and back, to make them safe for me and for Henry.
Today is President’s Day. When I was a kid, Washington and Lincoln had their own days. Now they are just lumped in with all the other presidents. I loved Washington’s birthday since it was always during February vacation. The first president I remember was Eisenhower because of Big Brother Bob Emery who had a kids’ TV program on in the early 50’s. I watched every day. He used to play a ukulele and sing The Grass Is Always Greener, a song whose words I still remember. On his wall was a picture of President Eisenhower to whom we lifted our glasses of milk in tribute. I didn’t really understand the why of it all, what President Eisenhower represented. He was just a picture on the wall.
It was President Kennedy who awakened my interest in politics simply because he was from Massachusetts. I began to understand the political process, the two party system and why I lifted my glass of milk.

No snow here thankfully and it has been above 50F during the day. Too bad I had to work 🙂
Sune is the only one here liking snow but they all love to eat it, I do wonder what in it that seems to taste really good 🙂
Have a great day!

Christer,
It is raining a bit so I’m hoping the snow will soon disappear. It isn’t freezing so maybe there is a chance.
I wonder why Henry likes it. Maybe because it is so cold. We used to collect snow in a cup and put maple syrup on it-tasty.
Have a great evening!

Hi Kat,
I have the same memories of Big Brother Bob Emery. I went to a taping of his show when I was a kid. It wasn’t as much fun as Boomtown. We sat in the audience and watched and there was no interaction with him at all.
I was worried when election time came up because Eisenhower was the only president I remembered at that time. I didn’t know what was going to happen. I think I was in 5th grade. Kennedy appealed to me right away. Nixon made the hair on the back of my neck stand up even then. 😀
Rocky likes snow. Piki Dog not so much. Neither one licks it although, if Rocky finds a piece of ice that’s fallen off the house or a tree, he’ll play with it and chew it.
It’s still snowing lightly up here. Not much accumulation from last night so I shoveled it myself.
Enjoy the evening.

Hi Caryn,
You got to see all the stars!! I saw him at the gazebo in Wakefield on July 4th. I was standing behind him and remember there was a bug on his neck, weird memory.
I didn’t really care about the Eisenhower election. I was 5 during his first run and 9 for his second.
The first time I could vote was the Nixon-Humphrey race. I was so glad I cast my vote for Humphrey and was pained when Nixon won, Like you, I thought he was sleazy in some way.
The snow is off the trees as it is raining. It is off my car except for the windshield. Of course that would remain for me to clear. Henry didn’t mind the snow and ran right out down the stairs then stopped for a lick.
Have a wonderful evening!

Hi Kat,
Thank goodness there’s no snow here. Right now it’s 43 degrees under partly cloudy skies.
I remember when Lincoln and Washington each had a separate day. In the Dallas school system we never got either day off because we were off for summer vacation after Memorial Day. Obviously, living in the south in the 1950s Lincoln’s birthday was only given passing mention. The earliest I remember about politics was going with my father to vote for Adlai Stevenson in the 1954 election. Like you the Nixon Kennedy debates piqued my interest in politics along with the election of JFK. I left Dallas for NYC in 1960. Dallas in those days was a hotbed of right wing politics. HL Hunt, of Hunt oil was a right wing, anti-Semite, racist who supported anti communist, anti labor organizations and anti communist radio stations. He gave huge sums of money to the Freedom Network and the John Burch Society which was headquartered in Dallas. It was also the home of General Edmond Walker who was another right wing nut case.
Just before JFK was assasinated in Dallas on November 22, 1963, Nellie Connelly remarked, “You can’t say Dallas desn’t love you”. She was riding in the back seat of the limousine next to governor John Connelly and said that right before the shots rang out.:-(

Hi Bob,
There really isn’t enough to complain about it. I swept it off the front step. There may be two inches. Now it is just getting wet. I figure it will probably freeze tonight as it will e in the 20’s. My steps are filled with deicer so I won’t worry about falling on them as I have a ew errands to do tomorrow.
You didn’t get the days off in February so you could get out in May?
We got both of them off only because they are the same week as winter vacation. Washington’s birthday got all the hoopla here as it was a holiday while Lincoln’s wasn’t.
I watched all the Kennedy-Nixon debates. I remember the issue of Quemoy and Matsu. For some reason those islands have stayed in my memory drawer.
What a horrible thing that Mrs. Connelly is remembered for that quote.

Yes, we didn’t get off for those days and only Good Friday before Easter. There was no spring break. Obviously, we got off for Christmas break.

We also got Good Friday off, and we had a spring break as well as the winter one. The school year was 180 days with 5 extra in case of snow making it 185 days, but they would deduct any of the five unused snow days.
