“Cold! If the thermometer had been an inch longer we’d have frozen to death.”
Looking out my window I see a sunny day with a dark blue sky and air so perfectly clear I bet I could see for miles. The only drawback to the day is the cold. It is only 31˚. I hurried out and back when I got the papers.
When I was a kid, in the winter, I mostly walked everywhere. My bike was in the cellar for the duration. It was too difficult to get it out of the cellar and then back again every time I wanted to use it . Right outside the cellar door to the left were the stairs. I had to lift the front of my bike out the door, roll it on its back wheel, turn to the stairs then pull it up the stairs. It was a tricky maneuver up and even worse going back. In the summer I could leave the bike outside but never in the winter so I walked in the cold and in the rain.
March 28th is baseball’s opening day, the earliest one in history. I am getting ready by watching Fever Pitch. It is such a great movie about my Red Sox finally winning the World Series in 2004. The Fenway Park scenes make me long for the warmth of summer.
Last night was a weird one. Henry jumped off the couch and went to look in the bathroom. He jumped and took off to the kitchen. The rest of the night he stayed away from me. At bedtime he ran upstairs and was on the bed when I got to my room. He saw me and took off down the stairs. He came back up and stood in the hall and growled. He then ran downstairs. I turned off the light and went to sleep without Henry on the bed, but he was beside when I woke up. I got his usual morning greeting and all was well.
Tonight is game night. My contribution is appetizers, and I have a couple of possibilities, but I’m still languid and haven’t any ambition. I’m toying with ordering Chinese appetizers or ones from my pizza place. I think I’ll flip a coin.

Hi Kat,
Ever wonder why spring training is held in either Arizona or Florida? Baseball may not be the national pastime any more, but it’s an American thing that other countries just don’t understand. If one doesn’t believe we are still a nation of immigrants, the city of Allen Texas is building a 15,000 seat cricket stadium. Who knew North Texas is a bastion of Cricket? I guess the telecom industry has attracted cricket fans. Somehow major league soccer limps along in this country with primarily immigrant fans.

It’s going to be a nice sunny day with a high in the low 50s.

Hi Bob,
I absolutely know why Florida and Arizona, the winter warm states. A few countries around are also baseballl fans.
Latin American countries produce the most major league players; in fact, about 30 percent of the major league players in baseball today are connected to Latin America in some fashion. Korea and Japan also have baseball leagues. During WWII Japanese players built fields in internment camps.
A cricket field? Yikes.
It is still sunny and still cold!!

Obviously, I had a mental senior moment concerning baseball in those countries. The cricket field and team is a result of the large south Asian population in the northern Dallas suburbs due to the numerous telecom and high technology companies in the area.

I think cricket is a fun game to watch though I know nothing about it. It reminds me of baseball.
I find it interesting that immigrants from the same country tend to put down roots in the same area. In Maine there is actually a population of Somalis, about 6,000. Maine just seems different from where they came from. There were all sorts of protests out them arriving. Even the mayor of Lewiston wrote a letter asking the Somalis to discourage any more moving there.
The Somalis have had a positive affect in Lewiston. Crime rates are down; the downtown has been rejuvenated and closed stores have been opened by the Somalis.

Hello Mr. President! Hasn’t anyone told him of the positive effects of immigration, including illegal immigration. Unfortunately, who else but either legal or illegal immigrants would climb up onto roofs all day in the heat of summer replacing shingles?

My neighbor is a legal immigrant, a citizen as is his entire family. He is a wonderful neighbor and my landscaper. I have never regretted hiring him or anyone he recommends.

We’ve had a wonderful sunny springlike weekend, back to rainy winter on Tuesday. The new old bike is ready to use so we went on a short bike tour.
Have fun tonight and good luck!

This time of year definitely has weird weather: spring today, winter tomorrow.
I hope you had a wonderful bike ride in the sun!!
Thanks!!
