“Who’s winning? Nobody’s winning. Cities are dying and ships are sinking and aircraft is going in, but nobody’s winning.”
Miracles really happen. Today is sunny. It is also a bit warmer at 32˚, but I am not enticed to go gallivanting. I am not even enticed to get dressed. Today will be another in a long line of sloth days.
I’ve been watching movies all morning. I keep jumping from movie to movie until I find one I want to watch. The last one, Giant from the Unknown, was laugh out loud awful so I loved it. It joins the ranks of such movies as The Giant Spider, one of those sorts where the whole plot is encapsulated in the title. Now I’m watching Jack’s Apocalypse which reminds me of a novel I read with some similar plot details called Alas, Babylon, the ending of which I liked. I didn’t like the the ending of the movie. In most other B-movies, the creatures, the aliens, the animals run amok and the crazed humans are done in by the gallant heroes. I like those endings.
My cleaning frenzy continues. Today is vacuum and dust day. I do have laundry piled high enough to be a hillock, but I don’t care because I can’t see it. The dust I can see. It tends to swirl around when I walk by it. The stairs are the worst.
When I was a kid, I never saw my mother clean and seldom saw her do laundry. She did all of that while we were in school. We’d leave in the morning with dishes on the counter, beds unmade and the hamper filled with clothes. When we got home, the house was immaculate and the clean laundry had been put away. Shortly after that my mother started dinner. That woman was a whirlwind.
My car was covered in frost this morning. I was glad I wasn’t going anywhere. It is probably melted now, but I’m still staying home.

Hi Kat,
My mother worked during the day Housework took a back seat to getting dinner on the table, cleaning up the dishes, organizing us for the next day. Laundry was a weekend chore.
Me, I do housework when I get annoyed with it. Dog hair drifting along like tumbling tumbleweeds will get me to vacuum. Dishes staring at me over the edge of the sink will irritate me enough to do them. Yes, dishes don’t have eyes but they still stare at me over the sink even so. Otherwise, I’m pretty casual about tidying up.
No sun up here except in the early part of the day. It’s not really much warmer either.
Enjoy the day.

Hi Caryn,
My mother didn’t work until all but my youngest sister were all out of the house. She didn’t go looking for a job. It happened that my uncle owned an elevator company and asked my mother to do payroll and and billing. She agreed. My sister used to make dinner and clean. As she didn’t work then, my mother was quite happy to pay her to have everything done.
Roseana and Lee clean my house every two weeks. They have been doing that for me for about 20 years. They are wonderful. Right now they are in Florida and will miss two cleaning days so I clean. I do clean a few things in between.
We had sun all day, but it was damn cold.
Have a wonderful evening!

Hi Kat,
When I lived in Dallas in the 1950s my mother did the light housework and she had a maid come in one day a week to do the heavy cleaning. My mother always called the maid, “My girl”. The woman were always African American and my mother would drive them to and from the bus stop. My mother paid for her bus fare and gave her lunch plus her hourly wage. Blacks were not permitted to live on our side of town and they had to sit in the back of the bus. Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of the bus in Montgomery in 1955 but segregation didn’t end for many more years.
Today was cloudy again with high temperature in the mid fifties. Friday’s high should be 75 degrees. However, Saturday they are predicting a low in the 20s and dry with the arrival of a polar vortex outbreak.

Hi Bob,
I have had a cleaning couple for many years. It all started when my roommate and I decided we didn’t want to work all week and spend the weekend cleaning. We had someone come every other week. I did the same thing when I moved into my own house. During the off weeks, I vacuumed and cleaned if necessary. I still do the same. Roseana and Lee are now in Florida for vacation so they will have missed two cleaning times (a month’s worth). I have been cleaning including things like cabinets and the fridge.
My mother did everything. I never knew anyone who had help to clean. It would have been too expensive on my father’s salary. Even when my father started making 6 figures, my mother still did the cleaning. In Africa I had a houseboy who washed my clothes and cooked for me. Washing by hand wasn’t anything I wanted to do.
Our high on Friday will be in the teens.

Who needs bad movies when another part of Brexit drama takes place. I wasn’t at home today and offline so I just had to catch up on what’s happened. It’s a sad drama.
Thanks to educational blog KTCC I learned the word ‘gallivanting’ today 🙂

Birgit,
It will wasn’t until the news at 6:30 that I heard about what is happening with Brexit. Theresa May might soon be job hunting.
Isn’t that a wonderful word?

No sun here but snow and rain plus rather strong winds today. The roads are much better than I feared though. We’ll get cold weather and sunshine during the weekend they say but I won’t believe it until it happens.
We kids had to do a lot of the cleaning when I grew up, not one of my mothers favorite things to do 🙂 🙂 I’m much nicer to myself now days though, I reason much like Caryn does 🙂
Have a great day!
Christer.

Christer,
Your weather will be here with two storms Friday through Saturday. North will get snow while I’ll get rain, maybe sleet, all ugly regardless.
My mother always cleaned. I clean in between visits from my cleaning couple, but I don’t do a lot of cleaning. Mostly I do downstairs as it is Henry dusty. I don’t like cleaning but figure I need to when the dust stirs all over.
Have a great day!!
