“What was the name of that dog on ‘Rin Tin Tin’?”

The morning has been a strange one. I slept late again. It was mirror under the nose time. Henry woke me up. He was jumping on and off the bed. I knew he wanted out so I dragged myself out of bed. In the hall I found my foot cozies. I had worn them to bed. How Henry got them I haven’t any idea. They were wet.

In the middle of reading the Globe and having my second cup of coffee, my friend Clare called. She and Tony had taken their dog, Darci Rose, to the eye specialist who had operated on Darci’s eye which was now weeping and inflamed. The decision was to remove her eye, but there was a complication. Darci is diabetic and needed an insulin shot before the surgery. The insulin was home. They called me. I got the insulin and syringes, sped to Sagamore and met them. When I say sped, I mean flying low, Star Wars landspeeder low, “No, state trooper, this is not the car you are looking for.” I think I was just a blur to other drivers. I was first to Sagamore, got gas and waited. After the hand-off, I went home far more slowly.

When I was a kid, our dog Duke went to the vets only for shots. One time he was in a ferocious dog fight. The other dog was bigger and heavier, but Duke was scrappy and fierce. After the fight, the other dog limped off. Duke had a horrible bite around his neck. My father said it would be fine. He left Monday morning for Maine where he was working all week. He was only home on weekends. After he left, my mother immediately took Duke to the vet’s who stitched the wound and gave him antibiotics. My father never found out. Duke’s wound was healing when my dad got home on Friday. He said to my mother, “See, I told you it would be fine.” That was one of the best lessons I learned from my mother. Don’t argue. It will get you nowhere. Just do what needs to be done and keep quiet about it.

    Hi Kat,
Or, as one of my friends used to say, “Always ask forgiveness. Never ask permission.” It was an improvement on my usual style which was never to ask for either. 🙂

Both Rocky and Piki Dog have been sleeping in these last few days. I think because it’s so dark out in the morning. I’m awake but they’re still curled up and sleeping deeply. It’s okay with me. I don’t want to go out in the cold and the dark either.

This morning I got the first snow of 2019. It was mostly rain with big flakes here and there. They were very visible as they were falling but ended up as tiny spots of snow scattered in the grass. I’ll take snow like that.

    Enjoy the day.

      Hi Caryn,
I don’t think I do much of either. What I do affects mostly me so no need for one or the other.

Henry sleeps late most mornings and so do I. The house is nicely warmed when I wake up.

We got neither rain nor snow. It was a chilly but dry day. I never mind those big snowflakes more water than snow falling. They are pretty to watch.

      Have a great day!

    Hi Kat,
We took our dogs to the vet for their shots and annual physical exam. Unfortunately, we also took the to the vet to have them put to sleep when they were either old and or terminally sick.

An Emergency animal clinic opened in our old neighborhood and seemed to flourish. Now one is being built on the next block in this neighborhood. The veterinary business is doing very well.

Rained this morning with temperatures just above freezing. As the day progressed the clouds remained but we stained dry. Tomorrow will be sunny with high temperatures in the mid 50s.

      Bob,
My family has followed the same vet from place to place. He is semi-retired now, but he saw Gracie a couple of times. You’re right about the pain of taking our pets to be put to sleep.

There is also an emergency vet not too far from me but it is massively expensive. It would have to be a grave emergency for me to go there again.

Today was chilly. It felt like winter in a good way. It even smelled like winter. I liked today.

It’s good to have friends 🙂 I hope the surgery went well.

I’m back home now and have to leave again tomorrow. I’ll spend 3 days in a nice old water castle which is a hostel now. Unfortunately rain is predicted.

      Birgit,
My friends called when they got home. Everything went well. The vet said they were lucky as the eye could have ruptured any time.

I haven’t been anywhere in a while, but I’m just fine with that. Being contented in winter is staying at home, reading and enjoying the slow pace of the day.

I do not like winter rain.
