“One winter morning Peter woke up and looked out the window. Snow had fallen during the night. It covered everything as far as he could see.”
The day is mostly overcast. Here and there a bit of blue is peeking through the clouds. The sun is just a bright spot behind the clouds. It was chilly when I got the papers. It will stay in the 30’s today.
When I was a kid, I loved the snow. I’d spend a whole morning making forts in the piles left by the plow. I’d even eat my lunch inside the fort. The walls were icy, glasslike. I had to crawl through a tunnel on all fours to get inside. The main room was wide, and there were side tunnels off to smaller rooms. I remember one year my fort lasted longer than the snow did everywhere else.
The sidewalks on the way to school were shoveled, but I did have to walk on the street in a few places. I remember running and then sliding on the packed snow. An icy spot would sometimes do me in and down I’d go. Mostly I landed on my butt.
My father pulled our sleds behind his car on the street in front of our house. He never went fast enough for me.
I remember tobogganing at the Winchester Country Club when I was in high school. The hills were my favorites slides. Usually it was with my two best high school friends. Jimmy always took the back. He’d run and push then jump on and hope to sit. The hills were steep, and we’d sometimes go airborne. Jimmy often fell off.
One time after a storm I took a shovel and went to make some money shoveling walks. My friend Michele came with me. At one house, the snow was almost higher than we were tall. Michelle gave up after a while with little progress and went home. I stayed and finished. The lady gave me a hot chocolate with marshmallow floating across the top and paid me extra for going it alone. That was the only time I ever shoveled.

The Prince
He came for an overnight, and oh was it fun. We went out last night with his Aunts and Uncles to play Bocce. This morning we saw “Aquaman” at 9:30 and then grabbed hot dogs for lunch before he left for his afternoon basketball game. These weekends are now so infrequent and are treasured.
There was a light dusting of snow this morning that disappeared quickly. My snowblower is game ready, but despite various warm ups have not been called in to the game. Mrs MDH and I are planning warmer climes in February

My Dear Hedley,
I’m so glad you had a weekend with The Prince. It has been a while since you’ve written of him. You couldn’t have added anything else to do during theme you had together.
It stayed cold but was sunny the whole day. When I watched the Patriots, it looked as if it was warm at Gillette with all the sun, but the sun was deceiving.

Hi Kat,
If I never saw snow, much less having to interact with it, would be too soon. When I lived in NYC I had to shovel the sidewalk around the house. We lived on a corner lot and there was a lot of sidewalk. Luckily we lived in Queens, the forgotten borough, and they didn’t plow the side streets so we didn’t have to dig out the car. 🙂
Here we have a chance for a few snow days in January and February. It’s been a couple of years since the last snow storm and I’m afraid we are due for one. Of course here an inch of the stuff paralyzes the entire city. Worse yet are ice storms. 😦
A few years ago I was in Montreal Quebec in December and boarded a flight to Dallas in 50 degree drizzle and cloudy skies. When we got to DFW airport the entire area was covered in a couple of feet of snow. It took longer to get a cab and get to my house than the flight to Dallas. 😦
Cloudy today with a few sprinkles and temperature in the low 40s.

Hi Bob,
I like watching the snow fall. I’ll even go walking in the snow to get my newspaper. One thing I will not do is shovel. Skip plows and Skip shovels.
February can be a really snowy month. One year we had the whole week before February vacation off because of snow.
Many people just can’t drive in snow. They don’t see enough of it to do well driving when it snows. Around here we have no choice but to be proficient.
