      Spaceman,
It is an uncommon carol as I never hear it played on the radio or on a Christmas special. It is definitely excellent music.

An Irish hymn if my memory holds fast

Beautiful, thank you. The song is included in the “Oxford Book of Carols” and is probably of Irish origin – perhaps 18th-19th century. It is probably not, as some think, medieval but more likely of “folk” origin as it is in mixolydian mode. The simple instruments including the bagpipe that are added to Alison and Yo yo give the song a medieval/folk flavor. It is a gorgeous recording of a fine old carol.

      61cqr,
I ended up in Wexford after crossing from England so I guessed this was Irish in origin. By the sound, I would have thought medieval. Alison Krauss’ voice is perfect for this song. The music is lovely.
