The words seem to fit so any times and events. I figured what has been happening here now is reflected in the lyrics.

Republican senators in particular will not criticize Trump for fear of a backlash from him which his base will support. The only ones who have spoken out are not running for reelection.

Strange setting but interesting to watch. It’s hard to believe that this was already 54 years ago. A timeless song.
