I never realized The Flamingos’ version was a cover! I just went looking for info on the original, and that definitely is a difference! The Flamingos just imbued it with meaning, didn’t they? I can see why the original has faded from memory.

I always hunt down the original, and I found it on youtube, but I like the Flamingos’ version the best. It is the one I remember.
