This pic explains why American cars have the gas cap on the right side. Old gas stations had the pumps at the curb. Japanese cars have the gas cap on the left because they drive right hand drive cars. Gas was cheap.

Gas was cheap which reflected the economy of the day. People didn’t make a lot of money in salaries.
I never thought about the gas cap. Mine is on the driver’s side. Is that right to you?

You drive a Camry which is a Japanese car. In Japan they drive like in the UK on the wrong side of the road and the wrong side of the car. Therefore the left side in Japan would be the passenger side which would be next to the curb where the gas pump would be located.

Thanks for the explanation. I’m wondering why they would adhere to the curb side for cars destined to the US.
