Science fiction movies in the 1950s had rocket ships that could both takeoff and land vertically. Amazingly, Spacex has achieved that feat.

You are so right. the rocket ships in this series landed vertically. Spacex must have been inspired by the 50’s rockets.

I’m not sure that they were inspired by old movies as much as by economics. Think about the enormous cost of recovering the Space Shuttle even though the vehicle portion was reusable.
