   Big Band Jazz is still being played at the premiere school of music, The University of North Texas, The One O’Clock Jazz Band records and plays both nationally and internationally.

     This is great!! I am so glad that the Big Band sound is still alive and being taught.

     In Boston, Berklee is the largest independent college of contemporary music in the world and is known for its jazz. I have seen a few programs at their performance center but none like this one. I’ll have to keep looking.

       In the 1940s Leon Breeden began the Jazz program at what was then North Texas State Teachers College. His bands caught the ear of Stan Kenton who helped the program develop into several lab bands, the top one practiced daily at one o’clock. When I went there the lab bands were world famous. I never scheduled a class at one o’clock so I could listen the their practices. Big band Jazz lives on in Denton Texas.
