“My dog is worried about the economy because Alpo is up to $3.00 a can. That’s almost $21.00 in dog money.”
Oh the morning I’ve had! Gracie and I went to the vets as she has been licking one spot and is also dripping drool (not a pretty sight) from one side of her mouth. The licking was because she has a diaper rash or what would be a diaper rash if she were a baby. It is in the same area a baby’s rash would be. The vet told me to baby wipe her rash and then use Gold Pond powder. As for the drool, she has this little hanging thing down from her gums. It isn’t uncommon. She also has really bad teeth, but I already knew that and have tried to clean them unsuccessfully. The vet recommended surgery to clean her teeth and get rid of the hangy thing. The problem is she has an irregular heart beat so surgery could be a problem. I had to make an appointment at the cardiologist’s office for Gracie to be evaluated. The vet complimented me when he said Gracie looks great. Her fur is shiny and she has held her weight.
My brother-in-law said he and my sister would like to fly me to Colorado for Christmas, and I would love to go, but Gracie presents a problem. I have been calling kennels all over the cape looking for a spot for her over Christmas but have not been successful as it is so late and all the places are booked except one, but Gracie doesn’t like other dogs so she can’t be in the general population where there is space. She needs solitary confinement. I have connected with friends hoping they had friends who might like to stay here while I’m gone. Prospects are looking grim.
Today is a perfect fall day. It is sweatshirt weather, warm and sunny. The air is still. The shower of pine needles has stopped for now. The sunlight is different this time of year. Every day as it moves it seems to touch different places than it did even as close the day before.
I have to fill the feeders and clean the bird bath as the poor birds were disappointed this morning. Even the woodpecker was checking for seeds. Luckily I have suet.
Gracie is asleep on the couch and she’s snoring. It has been a busy morning for her and for me too as I also had to stop at the store for baby wipes.
I see a nap for me coming on in the near future

Kat, the problems you describe are why I’ve never owned a pet of any kind. Almost every lady I’ve dated has been a ‘pet person,’ and that’s fine. A lady I used to date, and with whom I’m still friends, has a younger son who owns a kennel in addition to being a fireman and an EMT/Paramedic. He kennels her dog for her, which is a nice thing to do.
Over time, I’ve noticed ladies who have dogs are generally easier to get along with than those ones with cats (Mama, why is that?). With only one exception (a nasty little Chow/Spitz breed), I’ve always got on well with the dogs. Cats just ignore everyone because they know there’s nothing that compares to their own majestic, yet somehow o’erweeningly arrogant, self. Cats are royalists. The old saying ‘Dogs have owners; cats have staff’ has a basis in reality. I hope you can find a place for Gracie so you can take the trip to Colorado.
Cold, wet, intermittently rainy / misty / semi-foggy today. I’m a happy boy. Gotta wend my way to the fitness center in a bit to get my workout in and pick up the mail from the mail drop. After that, I’m back here and there’s nothing on my dance card for the rest of the day, so I’m free to play in Photoshop for as long as I want. Well, until ‘Top Gear’ comes on BBC America. I used to think ‘Star Trek’ would always be my all-time favorite show, but Hammond, May, and Clarkson are such a perfect blend of personalities it’s going to be hard for the Beeb to find their equal to continue the program. The American version of ‘Top Gear’ is just as lame as the American version of the original Japanese ‘Ninja Warrior.’ Some things just don’t have equivalents.
Time to shuffle over to the fitness center so I can maintain my health and cuteness … gettin’ old ain’t for the weak, y’ know …

Richard,
I figure they are far easier than raising children. Gracie usually goes to the vet once a year for her physical, but every now and then something crops up which needs tending. I think my life would have a giant hole if I didn’t have pets.
Okay, what about a day who has both? I also have two cats, rescued from the pound t 5 years old. They are now 17. They do have expectations, but they don’t ignore me. I can call them by name, and they’ll come running; however, they do avoid everyone else.
Some things definitely don’t translate well. I’m going to my friends’ house for game night and it’s one of my friend’s birthdays so we’ll have cake. I just have to wrap his gift. That’s it until Thursday when there is a speaker at the library. I am on the board and hate to miss any events there.
I am heading upstairs to get comfortable and maybe sneak in an hour nap.

Raising children is a whole ‘nuther dynamic. I only had one daughter, and she is the best friend I could have. You’re right about the cost of owning multiple pets. The lady I mentioned above at one time had four rescue Greyhounds and one dog who was badly mistreated by his owner. All of ’em were better off for her having taken care of ’em. Her vet bills, however, were outrageous – but she paid ’em. All of her greys that are no longer above-ground are buried in her back yard – and all of ’em have marigolds that bloom above their resting places. Enjoy the naptime …

Richard,
My boxers who came before Miss Gracie are in the backyard as our my two Siamese who lived to be 17 and 18. A dogwood blossoms over Shana and Maggie is patiently waiting for hers.
Dogs never grow out of clothes or shoes or need money for college so I think they take far less of a financial investment.

A cold night, 28,4 but the day became almost sort of warmish with a n almost 50 temperature. The coming days will be rainy and after that arctic winds will reach us and possibly give us snow during the weekend. Lots of time to change that prediction but since it is weather I don’t like I’m pretty sure it will come true 🙂
Yes that’s always a problem having a pet, it is hard to just fly away somewhere. Having four dogs as I did makes it impossible, it costs a fortune to have four dogs at the kennel at the same time 🙂 and no one wants top take care of them no matter how much they love them 🙂 I guess it is a bit too close to christmas to get a place at a kennel, I’ll hold my thumbs so that someone can stay at Your home with Gracie!
Have a great day!
Christer.

Christer,
We have been lucky so far with weather, no frost as yet. We still need rain to make up for what we didn’t get last summer. We are inches behind what we usually have.
Thanks! I’m hoping I can find someone as I’d hate to miss my family in Colorado.
Have a great evening!

Just saw where songwriter P.F. Sloan has died. http://www.ew.com/article/2015/11/16/pf-sloan-dead-dies. A couple of his hits at the linked page, but here’s a favorite song ABOUT him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_R1US0RNi4

im6,
I knew the name. It was familiar but I didn’t know why until I followed your link.
It saddens me how many singers and songwriters have died in the last year or two. They were a huge part of my life from my teen years to now. They remind me that I too am getting older.

Hi Kat,
I hope you find someplace for Gracie to stay so that you can go to Colorado and have T-Day with your family.
Rocky has the same crappy teeth. I try to brush them but he flips his head around so much most of the toothpaste gets on my shirt. He also has a broken tooth that appears not to bother him at all because he chews things on it. He will have to have deep tooth cleaning at the vet soon.
Piki Dog is okay about having his teeth brushed. But I still do an ineffective job. It would be much easier if they’d open their mouths and let me in there without a struggle.
Today started out cloudy and cold. I walked the dogs and then settled down to work on a class project for my online course. Later in the day, the man came to fix the gutters. When I went outside, it was sunny and warmish. I’d missed it all. But I got some work done so that’s okay, too, I guess.
Enjoy the evening.

Hi Caryn,
Thanks!
Gracie is not going to be happy. She hates her teeth brushed but I will be triumphant. She is dog and I am human!
We had sun first then clouds then sun for the rest of the afternoon. I read during the afternoon and went to amy friends for game night. I just got home about a half hour ago.
Early to bed for me tonight!
