One of my favorite boxsets is Harry Nilsson – The RCA Albums Collection. Beautifully mastered and full of bonus tracks and out takes, it takes the listener all the way along the road with Harry from Pandemonium and Aerial Ballet through Newman, Schmilsson, the standards and the desperate years that began with Pussy Cats
Harry was a brilliant song writer, accessible but often subversive, his voice before the damage was wonderful, he marched to the beat of his own drum. RCA wanted to put out a greatest hits, Harry redid his first two albums and released Aerial Pandemonium Ballet
Harry never toured, although by rumor he would sing at the odd record shows as the end approached. To a large degree he is forgotten. He isn’t in the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” although he has always been eligible. Personally I don’t give a monkeys about the RRHofF but hell Harry has never even been nominated.
On a Sunday morning, when the house is quiet, and I am reading the paper, I will drift through the box set and pick out something special.
Thanks for this one Kat – lovely.

My Dear Hedley,
I totally agree with you that Harry has been overlooked, never given the credit he deserves. His voice on Without You is amazing, flowing up and down the range. His cover of Everybody’s Talkin’ I think is better than Fred Neil’s original. His One is sweet despite the lyrics.
I don’t understand why he is forgotten.

Except for “Coconut,” Harry was never popular enough with the public to be forgotten, much less remembered. Within the music biz, Harry is considered a pop-rock god, but the R&RHOF mostly likes to honor commercial successes (unless they’re early Blues artists). I doubt Harry would give a rat’s a** whether he’s in the HOF. It’s hard to know because he was such a scoundrel. I know I’ve done so before, but once again I heartily recommend the documentary, “Who is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin’ About Him)?.” If you don’t already, I believe it will, at least, make you appreciate him. Whether it makes you LIKE him is a whole ‘nother story.

Kat, can you please delete the previous video link? Don’t know what’s going on.

im6,
I did all the editing!
I appreciate Harry and his songwriting skills as well as the fine covers he sings. As for liking him, I’ll have to watch that video!
