“By all these lovely tokens September days are here, With summer’s best of weather And autumn’s best of cheer.”
The morning has been a strange one. Gracie’s constant swallowing woke me up at 6. Figuring she wasn’t feeling great we went downstairs and she went outside-right to the grass and did a bit of mowing. When she came back, I read the papers and had coffee, but at about 9 I decided I needed to go back to bed. I did and was awakened at 11 by the same sound as earlier. Gracie went right out to the grass and munched. Meanwhile, the up and down the stairs gave me the opportunity to find a treasure trove: Maddie had been sick twice. Last night it was Fern on the bedspread. I’d call that a hat trick and wonder how long until it’s my turn. My pets drive me crazy sometimes.
The day is much cooler than it has been, and the breeze is much stronger. I went out on the deck at six and was surprised how cool it was. According to the paper it should be 60˚ tonight and in the high 50’s tomorrow night. The sun has not deigned to appear today. I don’t mind. We’ve had plenty of sun. A little rain would be nice.
This is it: the big weekend, the Labor Day weekend, but it isn’t like the old days when most places closed for the winter. On Sunday you’d drive down Route 28 at night and see everything was lit up: all the restaurants, motels and tourist gift shops. On Tuesday night it was like a ghost town. The lights had been turned off and everything was closed. During the summer, Main Street in Hyannis was one way. On the Tuesday after Labor Day it went back to a two-way street. Most movie theaters were closed. From Hyannis to Chatham only 4 were open, one in each of the four towns. The traffic disappeared as if by magic. I remember driving to the cape in the dead of winter at around midnight. From Plymouth on I saw one other car.
Columbus Day weekend is now the end of summer and right after that the seasonal shops, restaurants and motels will close until next year. The busses will disappear. The problem, though, is there will still be traffic, still be people in all the stores. The difference is they live here now.

Hi Kat,
Hat trick indeed. Yuck.
Rocky and Piki Dog have been grazing in the grass a lot lately. I wonder if it’s the heat or the change of season. They do it in the spring, too. Neither has presented me with any treasures. Yet.
There was a little bit of rain last night and I saw some lightening flashes, too, but nothing came of them. The morning was almost chilly when I was walking the dogs. There’s a bit of sun now but the air is beautifully cool and there is a lovely breeze. My windows and doors are all open and the AC is off. So nice and quiet. And cool.
Enjoy the day.

Hi Caryn,
Gracie doesn’t usually do anything but drool then go the grazing. Cats, though, are champions when it comes to throwing up.
Nothing here in the way of rain. Today was cloudy the whole day, and I was hoping but to no avail. It is getting chilly right now. I can feel it from the window behind me.
Have a great evening!

Some rain and some sun today and rather chilly at times, typical autumn weather here. So far only Orvar has had a bad stomach here but I have a cold that wont break out. All at work has it and I’m pretty sure it is because the kids are back to school again.
Nothing much is like it used to be any more, for good and bad. No stores or shops, exept the candy shop was open on Sundays, the big amusement park Liseberg always closed in September but now it’s open most parts of the year since they now days have a huge christmas market there for months 🙂 It is beautiful to pass the park at night, they have lit a few million lights on all the rides and buldings! I don’t think the risdes are open though.
There are always few cars and lorries on our roads when I drive to and from work, sometimes I can drive all the way to work without meeting any other kind of vehicle. Not now though, this is tractor season 🙂 They are everywhere filled with what ever they have been harvested.
Have a great day!
Christer.

been harvesting is what I intended to write 🙂

Christer,
I can’t remember the last time I saw a tractor. Because there are only a few farms left around here, I’d notice if I saw one.
I’d love see lights like on the rides and buildings. I keep a couple of sets of colored lit on the rail of my deck, and they look great.
I used to go to work early enough that I didn’t see a whole lot of cars but there are around. From Hyannis around 5 is a steady line of cars going home. Sometimes I have to wait two or more light cycles.

Here’s a link to the Christmas market on Liseberg:

That was a long one 🙂

Christer,
The lights are beautiful. I do wish there was a Christmas market close to me. There is one in Chicago, but that means a flight and hotels. I am envious.
Thanks!!!!

The ball is in the air, across Europe qualification continues to France 2016 and there is a crackerjack going on between Germany and Poland. Mr Cook and the Sparties march on to TV at 7pm, and soon the Lions will open in San Diego
Meanwhile the water back up to our sump pump decided to separate and unload 12 millions gallons in to the basement. I hate it when that happens.
Hope the Bochum Belle is watching football.

My Dear Hedley,
You are in sports’ fan heaven on Earth! I even watched a bit of the Pats’ pre-season game even though Tom wasn’t going to play. It was just because it was football again!

Hedley, no soccer for me today, free music festival in town instead. Bad timing! Nice music but I came home soaked and shivering.
Good luck at home, sounds awful. I hope you could ignore your basement and enjoy TV.
Kat, I think you may also like the young singer from Israel I saw today at the festival:

Birgit,
You’re right. I do like her and did from the start of her piano playing.

And your post today has just described what my weekend will be here on the Jersey Shore. Same thing. Somewhere along the way the season got extended to Nov 1. You could say perhaps it’s all about the money, but I must admit it will be nice when the majority of the tourists leave…
Hope your pets have only temporary problems. Been there, cleaned up that.
Have a great holiday weekend. Are you doing anything special? Or are you waiting for the tourists to depart and then you can enjoy your area like a local? (giggle)… 🙂

Coleen,
We’re coming into bus season. They’ll be all over the roads and will stop at the Christmas Tree Shop and Cuffy’s. Usually they are here during the week.
They all seem to be fine now. Gracie wasn’t herself until late afternoon, but the cats are fine.
No movie tomorrow as it is supposed to be cold; instead we’re having a game night with appies first then dessert at the end. That’s it for the weekend.
Enjoy the quiet weekend!
Waving!!

Today is my last day here in NJ and I was rewarded with a high temperature of 83 with very low humidity. All week the NY metropolitan area has been suffering through an early September heat wave. Back home in Texas the forecast is for highs in the upper 90s. Not as bad a Phoenix where it was 109 degrees last Friday.
Labor Day weekend in Texas is not the end of Summer but just a reason for a three day weekend. The real end of Summer comes in mid October at the close of the State Fair in Dallas. I’m not a fair goer. The exhibits are the same every year and most of the fair is selling stuff. Somehow seeing the prize winning steer and other agricultural things don’t interest me at all. The rides and the Midway appeal to a much younger crowd and are a haven for pickpockets both the illegal ones on the street and the legal ones behind the games.

Bob,
The weekend will continue to be lovely then it will get into the high 80’s, but that won’t last for long. Summer is on its way out. Tonight is downright chilly.
Labor doesn’t end summer here any more. The weekends will be filled with cars and motels with have few rooms. Columbus Day is the end of the weekenders though the weather will still be okay.
When I was young, I went to the Barnstable Fair but haven’t for years. I don’t enjoy rides which go in circles, and I don’t do games. I did find the animals tents interesting as well the the foods and quilts. They were all so lovely.
Enjoy your weekend!
