Our Cilla was a pop star. A Scouser from a counsel flat on Scotland Road. A typist who checked coats at The Cavern and sometimes sang Paul’s songs and would be managed by Brian.
The social upheaval of the early 60s brought us women who were instantly recognizable by just one name – Pet, Sandie, Lulu, Dusty, Twigg and the Shrimp. In all her ordinariness, Priscilla White became Cilla Black and we loved her as our Cilla.
In later years she transitioned to television first with The Cilla Black Shoe (cue McCartney’s Step inside Love”) and later with TV personality shows. But its as a singer she should be remembered. Here she is at The Savoy, standing in front of a totally different social group and willing us to love her. We did.
She was strong, driven and talented. Her loss whacked me, perhaps because of her age, her talent, fondness, or perhaps looking in the rear view mirror at times long gone.
My Dear Hedley,
This so whacked me too because it just seemed so wrong, far too soon. Her music was just on the a radio short time ago, all those wonderful songs sung by that tremendous voice. Too soon, far too soon!!
I vividly remember one series of the Cilla Black show ending and she sang “Step inside Love” and started to cry. It never occurred to me that it could have been contrived.
There is a really excellent 3 part mini series “Cilla” produced in 2014 and starring Sheridan Smith. Well worth your time if you can find it.
I should have mentioned that it was George Martin who produced and believed in Cilla. Below is a rather wonderful demo of Macca and Cilla working on “Step inside Luv”
Jean-Michel,
I hadn’t ever heard this before. I know the song from a Judy Collins’ album but this is the first time I’ve heard Cilla. I understand why it is your favorite!

MDH,
I don’t think I would suspected her of contrivance either.

MDH,
Every song I hear again reminds me of how beautiful a voice Cilla had. I don’t even remember the last time I heard this one. It is lovely.

im6,
Perfect for Coffee. I didn’t know she had sung it. Thanks, im6. I keep using the adjective lovely but it fits her so well.
