“God, it was hot! Forget about frying an egg on the sidewalk; this kind of heat would fry an egg inside the chicken.”

I stood it as long as I could. I watched the thermostat go from 72 to 76 in a matter of an hour or so. When the house started to close in, I did it. I turned on the air conditioning.

Today defines humid. The air is thick and still. I think there was a bit of rain earlier as the deck was damp, but under the umbrella was dry so the rain was light and quickly came and went. I do have something on my list today, but I’m hedging and thinking tomorrow. The more comfortable I get, the less inclined I am to move. I do have the laundry going: a load in the washer and another in the dryer. The laundry bag sat by the cellar door for two days, and that was enough to motivate me. Usually I don’t move until I am just about out of unmentionables.

I am most decidedly spoiled. Life is so easy. If I’m hot, on goes the AC. If I’m cold, I raise the thermostat. My car, like most of ours, has AC so I run from the car to the store which also has AC. I get my groceries delivered right to my kitchen. Roseanna and Lee come and clean every two weeks. My yard, deck and lawn are tended to every Friday. After the lawn is cut and the walkway trimmed, the deck is blown free of debris, especially acorns. Some of them are half eaten so I think they are the red spawn’s revenge. He probably roars laughing when I step on one and howl.

When I was a kid, everyone pretty much complained about the heat. It was a local pastime. The old “hot enough for you?” was often asked though no one expected an answer. It was the summer rhetorical question. Jumping over the sprinkle was a common remedy against the heat. The water always felt really cold at first, soothing. Sometimes we’d walk to the town pool, but we also had to walk back which defeated the purpose of getting cool at the pool. We never stayed home, though, heat or not. That just wasn’t done in summer. Every day had to be lived to its fullest.

In Ghana, I encountered HEAT. Day after day was often over 100˚. My shower had no hot water, but I didn’t care. A cold shower was relief. It was like jumping over the sprinkler. We never really complained, but we did use the old “hot enough for you?” mostly as a joke. I didn’t even have a fan, didn’t think to buy one. Traveling was best done at night or in the early morning because being crammed into a lorry was never pleasant and sitting next to a window never really helped. But again, we didn’t complain. We accepted our lot and just did the best we could.

Now I complain and whine. I am getting older and believe both are my due.

No risk of needing any Ac here but I have turned on one radiator to keep the dampmess outside. We’ll get lots of rain these coming days and it will stay on the chilly side too. Dampness is always nasty though, no matter if it is cold or hot 🙂

We had a few places to go when it was really hot, sort of concrete bathing ponds. Very shallow so no one would risk drowning in them. On rainy days we took small boats and played the ponds were oceans, they were still oceans when we bathed in them but then we were whales or big fish swimming around in them 🙂

At least one of them still exists and it’s very popular for families to go there when they can’t go to the ocean. I must remember to take a photo of it if I go to my old home town again.

There’s no need for a pond today tough, I can just step outside my kitchen ands the rain will shower over me 🙂

    Have a great day!
    Christer.

Dampness tends to stay in your bones. I know what you mean by needing the radiator. Sometimes you just need to warm up.I the summer dampness more than winter as the heat clears the winter damp.

We had the town pool only. There was the big pool and a shallow kiddy pool. That small pool had a shower in the middle and benches all around.

I don’t even know if the town pool is still there. I seldom drive that way.

I want some of your rain@!

      Have a wonderful evening.

I am about to venture out for the day…and dreading it. As they say, “It ain’t the heat, it’s the humidity!”

In any extreme temps, I try to pick my spots…In this case,I might deliberately stay in until evening, when it is a tad cooler. Scheduling does not always permit such luxury.

Face it…it’s just a hot freakin’ summer day! 🙂

And I know you will keep the animals nice and cool…

    Waving to make another breeze…

      Hi Coleen,
I decided to forego my errand until tomorrow. I figured doing two loads of laundry was enough of an accomplishment for one day.

My house is nice and cool right now. Al three of the animals are in here with me. They are snoozing.

Outside is still dark and humid. I wish the weather would rain ir clean. This is like limbo.

Waving back to give you even more of a breeze!

      Birgit,
The sky has lightened. We still got no rain. It was all north of Boston-downpours. More hot and humidity is on it way from now through Thursday.

The weatherman described the weather we have right now as oppressive.

    Hi Kat,
I’ve been out several times today because Rocky and Piki Dog are impervious to heat and humidity and want to be out in it. The humidity increased each time I went out. The sky grumbled some and spat a bit of rain but then it quieted down.
The AC is off but all the fans are on. It’s comfortable as long as Piki Dog doesn’t decide to glom his very warm little body right up next to me. He throws off a lot of heat which is nice in winter but not right now. 🙂

The laundry is at the bottom of the cellar stairs and that’s as far as it got. The dishes got done, though, so I am not a complete slug. 🙂

    Enjoy the evening.

      Hi Caryn,
Gracie goes out for just a few minutes then wants in. It is tricky as she has to ring the bell as the door is shut.

The weather says more and more humid as the week goes on-opressive was the description.

Laundry actually got done. One load is still in the dryer waiting to be folded. I’ll finish it tonight so I can feel accomplished.

      Stay cool!
